Over the last two decades advances in the understanding of disease at a cellular and molecular level has led to innovative therapies that are based on the administration of cells which have been modified outside of the body. Ex vivo cell therapy is in essence gene therapy delivered by transfer of therapeutic genes to cells in culture, which are then given to the patient to treat fatal infections such as AIDS, or other conditions such as cancer or genetic diseases. These manipulations include the purification and culture of therapeutic cell subtypes, as well as elimination of cells which cause disease (cancer cells or immune cells reacting to the body itself). Gene therapy can be delivered by transfer of therapeutic genes to cells in culture, which are then given to the patient to treat fatal infections such as AIDS, cancer or genetic diseases. For small-scale laboratory methods to become clinically applicable processes, these new therapies require efficient technologies for cell separation, cell production in culture and gene transfer. This book integrates the recent advances in biological and clinical research with developments in cell-based technologies to provide a comprehensive review for clinicians, researchers, biotechnologists and biomedical engineers working in this rapidly developing area. The biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry requires a broad perspective for development of future technologies, and this text will provide then with an excellent overview of this rapidly evolving field. Key Features * Comprehensive review by leading researchers * Hematopoietic stem cell development: transcriptional control, signaling pathways, hematopoietic growth factors and adhesion molecules * Clinical developments: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, cellular immunotherapy and gene therapy * Enabling technologies: cell separation, bioreactors, and gene transfer regulatory issues.

Modern cell biology has brought improvements in therapy for advanced malignant diseases through immunomodulation, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and other advanced techniques. Collected here are selected papers from the Fifth International Symposium of Keio University for Life Sciences and Medicine on Cell Therapy. All chapters include innovative basic research for clinical application: immunotherapy, cancer vaccination, molecular biology of hematopoietic stem cells, stem cell processing, and gene therapy. The book is divided into three parts: Immunotherapy for malignant diseases; Hematopoietic stem cell biology and clinical application; and International collaboration in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Included in the third part is information on bone marrow registries from around the world. The book thus presents up-to-date information on biological and clinical aspects of treatment, with insight into the future of cell therapy.

This text aims to provide simplified practical guidelines to start a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation unit which could be implemented in most centers and countries worldwide. The book also provides guidelines for existing transplantation units to upgrade their practice and implement new policies and procedures, in addition to developing therapies according to latest international standards and regulations. The book covers a wide range of practical implementation tools including HSCT program team structure, building inpatient and outpatient HSCT units, requisite laboratory support for transplantation program, practical aspects of stem cell collection and processing, HSCT program quality management, education and training, and data management. The book also addresses cost effectiveness and recommendations for establishing transplantation program in countries with limited resources. Written by group of internationally established experts in their corresponding hematopoietic stem cell transplantation fields, with contributions from many leaders of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation organizations, Establishing a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Unit: A Practical Guide is an essential, practical resource for all members of the multidisciplinary hematopoietic stem cell transplantation team.
