Abstract

Certain electrical, dimensional, and mechanical characteristics are covered in this standard. It also takes into consideration certain safety features of three-phase, 60 Hz, liquid-immersed, self-cooled, submersible transformers with separable insulated high-voltage connectors. These transformers are rated 3750 kVA and smaller with high voltages of 34 500 GrdY/19 920 V and below and with low voltages of 600 V and below.

Abstract

Identified in the 2014 published version of IEEE Std C57.12.38 is an error. Tw0 dimensions were provided for the high-voltage bushing height above the base of the transformer. The lower dimension (597+114/-13) should have been designated as being for units 167 kVA and 250 kVA only. The error is corrected in this corrigendum.

Abstract

Adoption of IEC 61000-4-15. Voltage fluctuations on electric power systems sometimes give rise to noticeable illumination changes from lighting equipment. This phenomenon is often referred to as flicker, lamp flicker, and sometimes voltage flicker. This recommended practice provides specifications for measurement of this phenomenon and recommends acceptable levels for 120 V, 60 Hz and 230 V, 50 Hz AC electric power systems. It does not make any flicker emission specifications for certification of individual products manufactured for use on these systems.

Abstract

Power quality is a pressing concern in electric power systems. One of the main requirements of power quality management is the guarantee of a sinusoidal voltage waveform with adequate amplitude at each node of the network. The fulfilment of such a control objective is facilitated by adaptive systems which can account for unpredictable fluctuations in operating conditions. Adaptive Voltage Control in Power Systems, a self-contained blend of theory and novel application, is an in-depth treatment of such adaptive control schemes. The reader moves from power-system-modelling problems through illustrations of the main adaptive control systems (self-tuning, model-reference and nonlinearities compensation) to a detailed description of design methods: Kalman filtering, parameter-identification algorithms and discrete-time controller design are all represented. Case studies address applications issues in the implementation of adaptive voltage control. Practicing engineers and researchers in power systems and control engineering will find this monograph, written by representatives of each field, to be a valuable synthesis of both while its accessible style will also appeal to graduate students. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Abstract

Based on the author’s twenty years of experience, this book shows the practicality of modern, conceptually new, wide area voltage control in transmission and distribution smart grids, in detail. Evidence is given of the great advantages of this approach, as well as what can be gained by new control functionalities which modern technologies now available can provide. The distinction between solutions of wide area voltage regulation (V-WAR) and wide area voltage protection (V-WAP) are presented, demonstrating the proper synergy between them when they operate on the same power system as well as the simplicity and effectiveness of the protection solution in this case. The author provides an overview and detailed descriptions of voltage controls, distinguishing between generalities of underdeveloped, on-field operating applications and modern and available automatic control solutions, which are as yet not sufficiently known or perceived for what they are: practical, high-performance and reliable solutions. At the end of this thorough and complex preliminary analysis the reader sees the true benefits and limitations of more traditional voltage control solutions, and gains an understanding and appreciation of the innovative grid voltage control and protection solutions here proposed; solutions aimed at improving the security, efficiency and quality of electrical power system operation around the globe. Voltage Control and Protection in Electrical Power Systems: From System Components to Wide-Area Control will help to show engineers working in electrical power companies and system operators the significant advantages of new control solutions and will also interest academic control researchers studying ways of increasing power system stability and efficiency. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Abstract

This book makes the area of integration of renewable energy into the existing electricity grid accessible to engineers and researchers. This is a self-contained text which has models of power system devices and control theory necessary to understand and tune controllers in use currently. The new research in renewable energy integration is put into perspective by comparing the change in the system dynamics as compared to the traditional electricity grid. The emergence of the voltage stability problem is motivated by extensive examples. Various methods to mitigate this problem are discussed bringing out their merits clearly. As a solution to the voltage stability problem, the book covers the use of FACTS devices and basic control methods. An important contribution of this book is to introduce advanced control methods for voltage stability. It covers the application of output feedback methods with a special emphasis on how to bound modelling uncertainties and the use of robust control theory to design controllers for practical power systems. Special emphasis is given to designing controllers for FACTS devices to improve low-voltage ride-through capability of induction generators.  As generally PV is connected in low voltage distribution area, this book also provides a systematic control design for the PV unit in distribution systems. The theory is amply illustrated with large IEEE Test systems with multiple generators and dynamic load. Controllers are designed using Matlab and tested using full system models in PSSE.
