Abstract

This book points to some new areas for investigation on squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Firstly, the features and management of some specific SCC is discussed to give the readers the general principles in dealing with these uncommon and sophisticated conditions. Some new concepts in adjuvant therapy including neoadjuvant therapy and gold nanoparticle-based photo dynamic therapy are introduced. Secondly, a detailed discussion of molecular aspects of tumor invasion and progression in SCC is provided with the emphasis on the roles of some important factors. The role of tumor microenvironment in head and neck SCC is specifically discussed. Thirdly, the roles of cancer stem cells (CSC) in cancer therapy of SCC are described. Molecular mechanisms involving therapeutic resistance and new therapeutic strategies targeting CSC are discussed in detail. Finally, other aspects concerning SCC are included, which involve the assessment, genetic manipulation and its possible clinical implications for the treatment of SCC.

Abstract

Although squamous cell head and neck cancer is not the most common cancer in the United States, it is an important and disabling malignancy that-through the advances recently achieved by multiple medical disciplines-serves as a model of multimodality solid tumor management. In Squamous Cell Head and Neck Cancer: Recent Clinical Progress and Prospects for the Future, leading expert physicians and investigators from around the world review the state of the art in the management of squamous cell head and neck cancer, with emphasis on coordinating different treatment modalities. The authors address several surgical issues, including laser-based surgery, larynx preservation approaches, salvage surgery, and neck management after non-operative treatment. They also discuss definitive radiation for larynx cancer, brachytherapy, altered fractionation radiation, intensity modulated radiation therapy, and the importance of tumor hypoxia, as well as the role of chemotherapy in sequential, concurrent, and adjuvant multimodality treatment schedules. Other topics of special interest include targeted and gene therapies, multimodality management of nasopharyngeal cancer, chemoprevention, toxicity modification, quality of life outcomes, symptom palliation, and epidemiology. Comprehensive and authoritative, Squamous Cell Head and Neck Cancer: Recent Clinical Progress and Prospects for the Future offers head and surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists an interdisciplinary review of recent successes on multiple fronts in the treatment of this disease, as well as a blueprint for future investigation.

Abstract

This book is a cutting-edge resource that provides clinicians with the up-to-date practical knowledge required in order to manage SCC patients optimally. It summarizes newly available information relating to the definition of high-risk SCC, its pathophysiologic underpinnings, and its management. New prognostic information and staging systems are summarized that enable high-risk tumors to be defined more precisely than ever before. Many helpful tips are provided on the practical management of challenging cases, including multiple tumors/field cancerization, high-risk tumors, nodal metastases, and unresectable disease. The authors are all acknowledged experts in the emerging field of high-risk and advanced SCC.

Abstract

apid progress in the understanding of carcinogenesis and pathology of epitheUal skin cancer has led to new strategies for the prevention Rand treatment of these malignancies. The goal of this volume is to comprehensively cover in a highly readable overview our present knowledge of pathogenetic mechanisms and molecular biology of Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas. Topics that are discussed in-depth by leading researchers and clinicians range from the newest findings in epidemiology, histology, photobiology, immunology, cytogenetics, and molecular pathology to new concepts for prophylaxis and treatment. Experts in the field as well as health care professionals not intimately involved in these specialized areas are provided with the most significant and timely information related to these topics. It is the aim of this book to summarize essential up-to-date information for clinicians and scientists interested in the biology of Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas. The chapters are written by authors who are experts in their respective research areas, and I am gratefixl for their willingness to contribute to this book. I would also like to express my thanks to Ron Landes, Cynthia Conomos, Sara Lord and all the other members of the Landes Bioscience staff for their expertise, diligence and patience in helping me complete this work. Abstract

Squamous epithelia form the essential lining surface of tissues in contact with the environment, including the skin, and mucosa of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, respiratory and genital tracts, and several other specialized tissues. These tissues are at highest risk for exposure to environmental carcinogens such as UV light, tobacco smoke, and infectious agents. Consequently, squamous cell carcinomas that form in these tissues are among the most common human solid tumors, and have high morbidity and mortality. The signaling pathways that regulate epithelial homeostasis and the alterations in these pathways that arise during cancer development share certain features among these different tissue sites. This book brings together timely reviews from experts in the field on mechanisms and signaling pathways such as EGFR, TGF1, NFB, PPARs and mTOR/AKT that regulate development of squamous cancer in both human and experimental mouse models, with a focus on how these specific signaling pathways can be utilized as targets for anti-cancer therapy. This comprehensive monograph will be important for researchers wishing to enter the field, for medical students, and for established basic and clinical investigators who would gain from an overview of the field.

Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus has a lower incidence than other gastrointestinal tract cancer; however, there are many difficult issued related to the choice of appropriate therapy for these patients. In recent years, the use of multimodal treatment has greatly improved the prognosis of patients affected by this disease but several aspects of the oncological and surgical management are still controversial. This book aims to give a homogeneous approach to esophageal cancer treatment, based on the author’s lifetime experience in conjunction with exhaustive review of recent literature. In each chapter surgeons and oncologists will find appropriate tools for correct management of the diagnosis and therapy of this difficult disease. The book analyzes all the aspects of staging and treatment, such as modern diagnostic and staging techniques (MRI or PET-CT), endoscopic treatment of early cancer, new minimally invasive and open surgical techniques, and combined treatment. In addition, there are chapters dedicated to the postoperative course of these patients, as well as their quality of life, with indications for the correct follow-up and treatment of relapses.
