Qu'ont en commun le "taa dam tâ-dâm" d'une annonce de la SNCF, le "ting" de validation d'un titre RATP, le "tu-tû-du dûûûû" d'un certain opérateur de télécoms, mais aussi le "pop" d'ouverture d'un jus de fruit, le "clic" d'un tube de mascara de luxe ? Tous ces sons et environnements qui font partie de notre quotidien partagent le fait d'avoir été composés. Derrière leur grande disparité, ils relèvent de ce que l'on nomme le design sonore. Sous ses formes commerciales dominantes, ce dernier agit comme un révélateur des évolutions récentes du capitalisme. Lorsqu'il se fonde, bien plus rarement, sur une exigence d'utilité sociale, il peut en revanche devenir un outil d'émancipation. Pour appréhender les spécificités du design sonore, Juliette Volcler entrecroise des cultures industrielles généralement étanches les unes aux autres et tire des fils entre des époques, des pratiques, des secteurs ou des objets auparavant isolés. Optant pour une approche littéraire et subjective, elle applique l'exercice de la critique sonore à l'espace urbain comme à des boissons gazeuses, à des alarmes autant qu'à des installations artistiques. A travers le design sonore et son développement actuel comme outil d'ingénierie sociale se pose plus largement la question politique de l'écoute au 21e siècle. Cet ouvrage invite ainsi les lectrices et lecteurs à opérer un déplacement dans leur manière d'entendre le quotidien et à éveiller une écoute critique. Juliette Volcler est chercheuse indépendante, curatrice et critique sonore. Elle est aussi l'autrice de Le Son comme arme. Les usages policiers et militaires du son (2011) et de Contrôle. Comment s'inventa l'art de la manipulation sonore (2017), tous deux parus aux éditions La Découverte.
