A lifetime of drawings by Ettore Sottsass, the world-renowned architect, designer and founder of the Memphis group. This beautifully designed volume brings together 700 drawings in chronological order from 1938 to the present. The colorful collection includes studies and sketches of buildings, furniture, ceramics, glass and jewelry interspersed with more personal pages of jottings and notes and other drawings not directly linked to design or architecture illustrating the full creative range of this contemporary master. Many of the drawings have never been published before and most of them are taken from the numerous notebooks kept in Sottsass's personal archives, contributing to the very intimate, private, and personal nature of this unique publication in a sort of grand notebook of sketches that covers the entire span of his creative activity. Hans Hollein's introductory essay offers fresh insights into the work of Sottsass. Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck, Austria in 1917. He received his degree in architecture from the Turin Polytechnic in 1939 and opened his first architecture and design studio in 1947. In 1958 he began working with Olivetti as a design consultant in a relationship that would last for over thirty years and win Sottsass three Compasso d'Oro prizes for design. In 1981 he founded the Memphis group, which soon became the symbol for "new design" and a point of reference for the contemporary avant-garde. One year later he founded the studio, Sottsass Associati. His works are held in the permanent collections of preeminent museums throughout the world.

De ultieme biografie van de toonaangevende ontwerper Ettore Sottsass, Design museum Gent beschikt over een grote collectie meubilair, glas, keramiek en andere objecten van Sottsass; het boek is zeer mooi uitgegeven met speciale kaft en reproductie van vele tekeningen in verschillende formaten; citaat website uitgever: Perhaps best known as the founder of the Memphis Group in the 1980s – famous for its colourful and flamboyant furniture, ceramics and lighting pieces – Sottsass started his career working as a design consultant for Olivetti. He traveled extensively, particularly in the United States where he found a lot of inspiration. He is quoted as once having said: "When I was young, all we ever heard about was functionalism, functionalism, functionalism. It’s not enough. Design should also be sensual and exciting." This playfulness certainly comes across in his work. Packed with beautiful images taken from the Sottsass archives, many of which have never been published before and including drawings and sketches from the designer’s countless sketchbooks, this book looks at his entire career. Text by Philippe Thome – an expert on Sottsass’ work – is ordered chronologically and split into periods, each containing sections on the main disciplines that Sottsass pursued in that period along with biographical material. For example, the 1945 -1949 chapter opens with a biography section followed by texts on sculpture/painting, architecture, interior/furniture, installations and graphic design. The book also includes five short essays, each written by an expert in their field and exploring Sottsass’ work in the following disciplines, placing it in a wider context: - architecture- graphic design- photography- industrial design- collector’s editions. The book is structured according to the narrative text which takes a chronological route through Sottsass’ career, and is broken down into periods, opening with a biographical section and then exploring the disciplines that were most relevant in that period. The book can either be read cover-to-cover as a narrative history, or by discipline, picking up the relative thread under each period.

Ettore Sottsass Jnr has had a profound effect on design in the post-war period. He has helped humanise the environment by injecting colour, symbolism and fun into everyday objects such as office equipment and domestic furniture; his philosophical and critical writings and his radical design experiments have made him a modern cultural force to be reckoned with. A leading figure in design in Italy and throughout the world, he is especially well known for his work as a consultant to the Olivetti company, notable sponsors of modern design. This book shows and examines his work, and traces the development of his ideas from the early post-war years to the present. Alternate chapters on contemporary Italian design put his achievements into context. Penny Sparke is a tutor in the History of Design at the Royal College of Art. London.

Includes newely comissioned essays by curators and scholars, this book explores how Sottsass's art and philosophy presaged the dawn of PCs, the service industry, and the gig economy. Ettore Sottsass was an architect, industrial designer, painter, writer, photographer, and founder of the Memphis group, whose designs are undergoing an impressive renaissance. But Sottsass was more than just an important designer. His approach to object design-marked by bold colors, tactility, and vitality- was a direct response to the world of mass production and the assembly-line economy. This revelatory collection of essays by leading thinkers in the fields of political theory, economics, the media, design history, and cultural theory contextualizes Sottsass's work in unprecedented arguments that draw a line from his work at Olivetti to the iconoclastic designs he produced at the dawn of the 21st century. Divided into five chronological sections-from the late 1950s to Sottsass's death in 2007- these essays are illustrated with vibrant images of his work and archival photographs. Deeply researched, the book makes crucial connections between postwar Europe and America, and the way we work and live today.
