La réalisation d'un acte d'anesthésie comprend trois périodes : l'évaluation préanesthésique, l'anesthésie et la surveillance postopératoire. La rigueur apportée à l'évaluation préanesthésique conditionne pour beaucoup la réussite de l'anesthésie et de la surveillance postopératoire. Cependant, la période postopératoire immédiate comporte de nombreux risques : hypoxiques (effets prolongés de l'anesthésie, obstruction des voies aériennes), myocardiques (la majorité des accidents ischémiques myocardiques périopératoires surviennent dans les 24 à 48 premières heures postopératoires), ou encore hémorragiques et chirurgicaux (hémostase incomplète, lâchage de suture ou d'anastomose). Certaines techniques chirurgicales requièrent une surveillance spécifique : surveillance d'un drainage thoracique, d'un lavage vésical, etc. D'autres techniques nécessitent une surveillance particulière : dépistage de complications neurologiques en cas d'anesthésie locorégionale périphérique ou encore levée de l'anesthésie par rachianesthésie. Enfin, la gestion de la douleur postopératoire, initiée pendant l'anesthésie, doit être poursuivie et adaptée lors du réveil. Rendues obligatoires par le décret 94-1050 du 5 décembre 1994, les salles de surveillance post-interventionnelles (SSPI) fonctionnent avec des médecins anesthésistes, des IADE et des IDE, et ont pour objectif d'anticiper et traiter à tout moment une complication liée à l'anesthésie, d'une part, et à l'acte chirurgical, d'autre part. Ces fiches techniques proposent des attitudes pratiques et synthétiques selon les techniques chirurgicales classiquement utilisées, et s'adressent aussi bien aux médecins anesthésistes qu'aux infirmiers (IADE et IDE), en début de carrière ou déjà aguerris.
