The book includes selected papers from those presented at the International Working Meeting on Soil Micromorphology in San Antonio, Texas, July 1988. Each section of the book is introduced with an invited plenary paper followed by selected contributed manuscripts. The volume is intended to give the reader insight into the more recent research work involving soil micromorphology and an evaluation of the present day state of the science. New applications of micromorphology to both lunar pedology and archeology are presented. Recently developed methods for staining of microorganisms and thin

It is crucial that scientists and engineers develop their expertise and capability through research and practice to quantify the interaction of infrastructure with the surroundings and the ground upon which they are founded. Therefore, the engineering concept 'soil-structure interaction' forms an integral part of delivering successful project outcomes. As the Lead and Honorary Editor for this Special Issue, Soil-Structure Interaction, I cordially invited the submission of esteemed articles related to recent projects, research, or case studies. These articles detail how geosciences (soil, rock, ground water, geochemistry, geology, hydrogeology, surface run-off, rain, wind, and temperature) directly interact with and impact the performance of human-made structures, buildings, or infrastructure through the following aspects: i Underground construction; ii Innovative ground improvement methods; iii Geological explorations and interpretation; iv Instrumentation and field observational method; v Use of artificial intelligence or algorithms; vi Forensic engineering or inverse-analysis methods; vii Geophysical methods for soil or rock characterization; viii Advancement in laboratory and field testing of geomaterials; ix Advancement in numerical analysis; x Advancement in multi-disciplinary design theories, codes of practice, and engineering education.

This book is about digital soil morphometrics which is defined as the application of tools and techniques for measuring, mapping and quantifying soil profile properties, and deriving depth functions of soil properties. The book is structured along four research topics: (i) Soil profile properties, (ii) Soil profile imaging, (iii) Soil depth functions, and (iv) Use and applications. The pedon is at the heart of digital soil morphometrics. The use of digital soil morphometrics exceeds the pedology and soil classification purpose that it currently serves – it is used in rapid soil assessment that are needed in a range of biophysical studies. Digital soil morphometrics has the potential to enhance our understanding of soils and how we view them. The book presents highlights from The IUSS Inaugural Global Workshop on Digital Soil Morphometrics held in June 2015 in Madison, USA.

Soil reinforcement is a very useful technique to construct several cost-effective soil structures in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The most commonly used reinforcement materials are galvanised steel strips, geosynthetics in the form of woven geotextiles, geogrids and geocomposites, and fibres from natural and waste products. In recent years, there have been advances in the area of soil reinforcement, especially in the utilization of the technique in field projects. The researchers have also been working to understand the behaviour of reinforced soil considering the field challenges of reinforced soil structures. This edited volume contains contributions on advances in reinforced soil structures, mainly flexible pavements, footings, embankments, stone columns/piles, and slopes, as covered in the subject areas of geosynthetic engineering and fibre-reinforced soil engineering. This volume is part of the proceedings of the 1st GeoMEast International Congress and Exhibition on Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, Egypt 2017.
