De auteur beschrijft op meeslepende wijze de opgang en ondergang van Suharto's New Order. Ongetwijfeld heeft Suharto's regime de levensstandaard van de overgrote meerderheid van de Indonesische bevolking verbeterd, maar tegen een prijs. Corruptie, nepotisme, en mensenrechtenschendingen vierden hoogtij. De oppositie stak meer energie in het elkaar bestrijden in plaats van een gemeenschappelijk front te vormen tegen Suharto. Toen Indonesië in 1997 getroffen werd door een economische crisis was het spel uit. De bevolking werd nu rechtstreeks geconfronteerd met de wantoestanden van Suharto's economische en politieke systeem. De roep om verandering nam toe. Het buitenland daarentegen, en dan vooral de VSA, was meer bevreesd om de nakende economische en politieke chaos indien Suharto van het politieke toneel zou verdwijnen.
