Au lieu de réduire d’emblée Socrate à un personnage conceptuel, il convient d’abord, pour l’historien, de le reconnaître dans son aspect (eidos) de personnage énigmatique. En dépit du style clair et argumenté de ce chef d’œuvre du classicisme grec que sont les Dialogues de Platon, force est de constater qu’en eux l’énigme est fréquente, voire omniprésente. Or, pour les Anciens, constituer de l’ainigma ne signifiait pas extrapoler, fabriquer une légende ou un concept susceptibles de recouvrir une réalité mais, au contraire, signifiait dissimuler un certain nombre de données au sein d’un message. Cependant, si Platon tourne autour du personnage de Socrate en déplaçant les zones d’ombre, par ce mouvement même il en dévoile des facettes inattendues. Car selon la logique ambivalente des Anciens, l’ainigma tout en étant dissimulation, cryptage, présente toujours une part de révélation qui doit pouvoir être décelée. Du côté de Xénophon, si le témoignage sur Socrate n’offre qu’un éclairage partiel et statique, sans diversification des points de vue, il révèle aussi, mais d’une manière accidentelle et involontaire. Ce dont l’historien peut tirer profit. Pour progresser un tant soit peu dans la question socratique, pour percer quelque peu l’énigme des Dialogues, il s’agit de passer de l’esprit de déconstruction des études actuelles à un esprit de décryptage. Sur le mode de l’enquête policière, avec l’aide des interprètes les plus avisés, il est possible d’amener les textes à révéler ce qu’ils cachent, si ce n’est que le thème de la révélation (phèmè) est ici doté d’un sens philosophico-religieux.
