Popular culture is saturated with claims about a science of human life. De opvoeding en vorming van mensen tot bewuste burgers in een democratie is de rode draad doorheen dit boek. Het aandeel van vrouwelijke pedagogen in de theorievorming hierover wordt extra beklemtoond. De meeste vrouwen die hier aan bod komen, kregen eigenlijk nooit de aandacht die ze verdienden.
