This book focuses on Islam in Indonesia, showcasing the wide range of Muslim organisations, belief systems and movements, together with an analysis of the political behaviour of Indonesian Muslims. It includes an investigation of the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how Muslims within the archipelago interact within these contexts. In doing so, it promotes a more nuanced understanding of Indonesian Muslim society by approaching it through the utilisation of scholarly frameworks. Theories related to religion and society are used, especially in characterising the transition of the Indonesian Muslim society from pre-New Order to post-New Order. Particularly significant is Abdullah Saeed's framework in understanding one’s attitude towards key and contemporary issues, originally used to understand one’s attitude towards the religious ‘other’. Dr. Leonard C. Sebastian is Senior Fellow and Coordinator of the Indonesia Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS). Educated at York University (Canada) and The Australian National University, his academic training is in History, International Political Economy and Strategic and Defence Studies. He has covered Indonesia in a career spanning more than two decades and published his first major work on Indonesia about defence and security doctrine titled Realpolitik Ideology: Indonesia’s Use of Military Force (2006). Syed Huzaifah Bin Othman Alkaff is a Associate Research Fellow at the Indonesia Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. His research interests include Middle Eastern and North African Politics, Political Islam, Islamic Jurisprudence, and Islamist Movements in Southeast Asia.

The rise of a significantly large (and young) Muslim population in the West, possessing no historical tradition of being a minority in a non-Muslim environment, has led to a recurring debate about the integration of Muslims into Western societies and the compatibility of Islam with Western values. The proliferation of Islamic sites to which thousands of Western Muslims turn to request a fatwa, i.e. a religious legal opinion on any issue, hints at the urgency felt by these Muslims to find a way out of this conflictual dialectic, since most of their questions concern precisely how to reconcile Islamic principles with some aspect of modern life in the West. The pervasiveness of these internet fatwas is a striking phenomenon worth of study that can help finding answers to the longstanding debate about the integration of Muslims in the West and in modern societies. raising interesting questions: What do Muslims in Western societies ask these virtual muftis and why? Who are they? What are their desires and concerns? In their asking, are these Muslims seeking integration or separation? Do these questions reflect common clichés about Muslims, as conveyed by some Western media narratives or not? Do they reason as individuals or as members of a religious community? This book presents a scientific study aimed at answering these questions through a statistical and discourse analysis of a large corpus of more than ten thousand fatwa questions extracted from the huge fatwa databases available on the internet. This book uses a comparative research design to analyze the reporting on the Jewish minority and the Muslim minority in German newspapers from 2010-2019, asking whether minorities are truly treated as equals in the reporting of the mainstream German media. After providing historical and socio-political context for both groups as minority populations in Germany, the authors make use of qualitative and quantitative methods to examine sentiment and determine whether the media demonstrates a unifying or a well-differentiated portrayal of the two groups. The findings show that reporting on these groups is not as unbiased as many in Germany believe. Drawing on frameworks including the needs-based model of reconciliation, the revised integrated threat theory, and the model of acculturation strategies, the book then discusses the implications for both journalistic reporting and broader social policies in support of a constructive encounter of dominant and non-dominant groups in a diverse society.
