This book brings together a series of contributions by leading scholars and practitioners to examine the main features of smart contracts, as well as the response of key stakeholders in technology, business, government and the law. It explores how this new technology interfaces with the goals and content of contract law, introducing and evaluating several mechanisms to improve the 'observability' and reduce the costs of verifying contractual obligations and performance. It also outlines various 'design patterns' that ensure that end users are protected from themselves, prevent cognitive accidents, and translate expectations and values into more user-oriented agreements. Furthermore, the chapters map the new risks associated with smart contracts, particularly for consumers, and consider how they might be alleviated. The book also discusses the challenge of integrating data protection and privacy concerns into the design of these agreements and the broad range of legal knowledge and skills required. The case for using smart contracts goes beyond 'contracts' narrowly defined, and they are increasingly used to disrupt traditional models of business organisation. The book discusses so-called decentralised autonomous organisations and decentralised finance as illustrations of this trend. This book is designed for those interested in looking to deepen their understanding of this game-changing new legal technology.

Build decentralized applications with smart contract programming. Following the curriculum from an active blockchain course taught by the author at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas, this book fills the gaps for you from learning about basic cryptocurrency uses of blockchain to understanding smart contracts and dapps. You'll first start by understanding the basics of blockchain technology. Take a business point of view to discover general concepts about blockchains and dapps or "decentralized apps" built off of smart contracts. Next, learn about the token economy, how to design tokens, and relevant client technologies, such as web3, metamask, and UI/UX design. Then, install a blockchain node yourself.

Our world is increasingly digitalised, new technologies aim to build a better world. The one of particular interest to us is Blockchain technology, which aims to revolutionise the digital world. Recently, many industries have begun to take an interest in it and the use of smart contracts. The insurance sector is the one we are interested in during this research thesis. This industry faces many challenges, including falsified claims, costs incurred by all intermediaries, and low customer satisfaction. The Blockchain could be the solution, it allows instant, inexpensive and middleman-free transactions. But not only that, it has the potential to change the rules of the game and restore power to the people based on a mechanism of trust. This trust is no longer based on a centralising body but on a decentralised and shared system. This thesis aims to understand the impact of the Blockchain, the opportunities and threats that may exist. This work is based on the reading of scientific and managerial articles as well as a qualitative study carried out with the help of interviews with various experts in the field. We will see that the technology is not yet mature, there are still some challenges to be met, but more and more players are taking an interest in it and experiments are already being carried out.
