The second volume of Sir Osbert Sitwell's autobiography - the whole of which to be called "Left hand, right hand !" like the first volume - is entitled "The scarlet tree". This name refers to the belief of the old anatomists that the blood formed a growing tree within the human body. "Left hand, right hand !" revealed at once the scope and architectural sweep of a great literary enterprise, and enjoyed a success unequalled by any other autobiography of recent times. In "The scarlet tree", which carries the life of the author on from his eight to his eighteenth year, there is a constant broadening and enrichment of the story in the development of his own experience and interests, in the expansion of the other personalities that germinated in "Left hand, right hand !" and in the sequels that are now given us to various clues.
