La plupart des recherches sur les traditions dites chamaniques partent de l'hypothèse - relativement ancienne et classique - selon laquelle toutes ces traditions se réfèrent plus ou moins directement à un même substrat culturel. Mais cette hypothèse ne fiat pas l'unanimité. Cet article voudrait démontrer, à l'aide des résultats de recherche de son auteure sur l'ensemble de la côte du Pacifique nord, que les traditions chamaniques qui s'y retrouvent sont essentiellement distinctes les unes des autres et, dans le même mouvement, qu'elles résistent au temps. The majority of research on shamanic traditions begins with a relatively old hypothesis. This classic hypothesis states that all these traditions share, to some degree, in the same cultural substratum. But agreement on this idea is far from unanimous. This article seeks to demonstrate, through the author's research on the Pacific North as a whole, that shamanic traditions found there are distinct from each other and that they are resistant to change. A maior parte dos pesquisadores sobre as tradições ditas xamânicas falam da hipótese - relativamente antiga e clássicasegundo a qual tods as tradições se referem mais ou menos directamente a um mesmo substrato cultural. Esta hipótese não é unânime. Este artigo pretende mostrar, com a ajuda dos resultados da pesquisa da sua autora sobre o conjunto da costa do Pacífico norte, que as tradições xamânicas que aí se encontram são essencialmente distintas umas das outras e, no mesmo movimento, que elas resistem ao tempo.

This article explores the borders of gender categories through some Inuit social categories and practices. It is intended as an invitation to broaden the anthropological debate on men/women relations, too often confined to the question of power and domination relations, or equality, and limited by a biological and naturalistic view which expresses itself in a binary logic. It proposes the use of new conceptual tools, such as a ternary paradigm of gender categories, illustrated by a gender triangle with a "third sex" permitting a redefinition of cultural transsexualism, transvestism and shamanism ; another concept also, is that of "family atom", ideological model and microcosm of society, composed of a couple of parents and a couple of children, which can explain the logic underlying social transfers of life and identity by taking into account the number of children in a sibling group, their birth rank and their relative sex. The approach developed is holistic and analogical ; expressing epistemological and methodological preoccupations similar to those at work in various disciplines of the social sciences and humanities ; its bearing is heuristic. Cet article explore les marges des catégories de sexe à travers quelques représentations et pratiques sociales inuit [1]. Il cherche à élargir le débat anthropologique sur les rapports hommes/femmes trop souvent confiné dans une problématique de rapports de force et de domination, ou d'égalitarisme, et enfermé dans une vision biologique et naturaliste qui s'exprime dans une logique binaire. Il propose l'utilisation de nouveaux outils conceptuels [2] comme un paradigme ternaire des catégories de sexe, illustré par un triangle sexuel, avec un « troisième sexe » qui permet notamment de repenser le transsexualisme culturel, le travestisme et le chamanisme ; d'un autre concept aussi, l'« atome familial », modèle idéal et microcosme de la société, composé d'un couple de parents et d'un couple d'enfants, qui permet d'expliquer la logique sous-jacente aux transferts sociaux de la vie et de l'identité, en prenant en compte le nombre d'enfants dans une fratrie, leur rang (le naissance et leur sexe relatif). C'est une approche de type holiste et analogique ; elle rejoint certains courants de recherches, exprimant des préoccupations épistémologiques et méthodologiques de même ordre, à l'œuvre dans plusieurs disciplines des sciences humaines [3] ; sa portée est de nature heuristique.

The Iglulik Inuit play a central role in the Fifth Thule Expedition. The first group of Inuit encountered by Rasmussen on Canadian territory, they had never been the object of a systematic ethnography and were to provide the expedition with baseline data for the study of other groups. This article underlines the exceptional richness as well as weaknesses of Rasmussen's Iglulik material and shows the fruitfulness of submitting these data to a new ethno-historical and cultural examination. Les Inuit iglulik occupent une place essentielle dans la Cinquième Expédition de Thulé. Premier groupe rencontré par Rasmussen en terre canadienne, les Iglulik n'avaient jamais fait l'objet d'une véritable ethnographie et devaient servir à l'expédition de point de comparaison pour l'étude des autres groupes. Cet article souligne à la fois la richesse exceptionnelle et les lacunes des données de Rasmussen sur la culture intellectuelle des Iglulik ainsi que l'intérêt de les soumettre à un examen ethno-historique et critique.

This volume takes its starting point in shamanism in the Nordic countries and explores expressions and the lives of shamanic materialities in contemporary Finland and Norway. Shamans interact with spiritual powers and beings, but their religious practices unfold in a material reality. In this 'Element', then, we begin with the materiality of shamanism and focus on how the drum, the sacrificial site, the power animal, and a mushroom bridge the gap between the profane and the divine and create networks and dynamics in a shamanic worldview as well as in the wider society. Throughout its sections, the authors inquire into the ways the construction of the category shamanism makes shamanic materialities come to life.
