"Why Sesostris? Why does the classical antiquity tell stories about this Egyptian hero king of the second millennium BC? On which basis? The contributions of this conference volume try to systematically answer the question how these narratives come into being and grow. It is not a single historical king Sesostris. Rather the literary tradition of two millennia augments the story with the later Sheshonq kings, makes Sesostris the international hero of demotic narratives and finally leads to the Greek Sesonchosis Romance which itself is widely received. All this takes place in an international cultural context"--

"Pharaoh Sesostris III is one of the most emblematic kings of ancient Egypt. His reign (circa 1872-1854 BC. BC) during the height of the Middle Kingdom, marks a turning point in the history of ancient Egypt. Sesostris was an Initiator of major political and administrative reforms. During his rule he built a network of fortresses, and delineated the boundaries of the Egyptian kingdom with Nubia (modern Sudan); He also established extensive trade and diplomatic relations with his eastern neighbors (Cyprus, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Israel, Palestine). Under Sesostris the Egyptian state was reinvented in depth. This change is embodied in the sculptor’s art: the enigmatic portraits of this Pharaoh that have reached us break with traditional canons and exhibit severe features, symbols of wisdom, as well as ideal traits. Other artistic productions illustrate a renewed prosperity and a vitality as a result of cultural exchanges with neighboring kingdoms."--Publisher’s description.
