Abstract

Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, whose angles correspond to the sites of three ancient kingdoms, may be likened to the floor of an ocean of history that is mantled with successive layers of sculpted, inscribed stonework. This is a holy place and comprises such evocative names as Abhayagiri Vihara, Dambulla, Jetavana, Kandy, Polonnaruva and Sigiriya. Teams of archaeologists have been engaged here since 1980 on a vast project to uncover the spiritual footmarks of countless generations at this busy historical crossover between East and West. --

Abstract

Written by the leading authority on Theravada Buddhism, this up-dated edition takes into account recent research to include the controversies over the date of the Buddha and current social and political developments in Sri Lanka. Gombrich explores the legacy of the Buddha's predecessors and the social and religious contexts against which Buddhism has developed and changed throughout history, demonstrating above all, how it has always influenced and been influenced by its social surroundings in a way which continues to this day.

Abstract

'After the Fall' shows how Sri Lankas post-independence exercise in nation formation was beset with using language domination as an instrument of partisan power and racial memories as the way to define nationhood. That resulted in an escalating conflict through half a century of ethnic violence - giving rise to one of the worlds most fearsome militant movements and the cult of the suicide bomber. It analyzes how Eelam war four (20069), which came like a tornado crashing through all the red-lines of a war (even a guerrilla war), succeeded - and at what cost and consequences.

Abstract

The publications of the Hakluyt Society made available edited early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, & covering voyages to the New World, to China & Japan, to Russia & to Africa & India. This volume, first published in 1897, contains the first English translation of the Greek monk Cosmas Indicopleustes' description of the universe & of his voyages to India, written c.550 C.E. His vivid descriptions of India, Sri Lanka & Ethiopia provide invaluable information on vanished monuments & cultures, though his book also insistently proposes that the earth is flat & denounces the 'Pagans' (mainstream ancient philosophers including Ptolemy) who, like most of Cosmas' Christian contemporaries, argued in favour of a spherical earth.
