The second volume of the New Senfl Edition (NSE) provides the second half of the motets for four voices and includes many hitherto unknown works by Senfl (some of them fragments), renowned motets, such as Senfl's Nisi Dominus, or the polyphonic setting of Non moriar sed vivam, which Senfl sent to Martin Luther in 1530 as a consolation. Editions will also render three Salve settings (including a Christological adaption), a multitexted Regina caeli, as well as nearly all of Senfl's humanist motets (Quid vitam sine te, Sum tuus in vita (i), Tristia fata boni) accessible. The Critical Reports accompanying the editions offer information on every motet with regard to the texts set to music, the plainchant models, an evaluation of the sources (incl. a synoptic overview of variant readings), as well as details on the history of each composition.

The first encompassing catalogue of compositions by the Renaissance composer Ludwig Senfl. The volume includes detailed information concerning every composition and provides reliable data on the transmission of the composer's works. Until now, scholars have had an inadequate picture of the scope and transmission of the œuvre of Ludwig Senfl (c.1490-1543), one of the most important Renaissance composers of the German-speaking lands. The current publication presents an extraordinary and exceptionally comprehensive catalogue raisonné for this Renaissance composer. Volume 1 of the two-volume set forms the catalogue of works (including lost and misattributed compositions). It is organized according to genre and provides a thorough description of every composition. Each entry includes a musical incipit, comments on the musical structure, and comprehensive information concerning the transmission and the authenticity of the composition in addition to many other details. In its layout, structure, and critical approach to Senfl's music, this volume enables far-reaching research into the composer's style as well as a detailed characterisation of his œuvre, and thus it provides clues towards a long-desired chronology of the composer's works. The Senfl Catalogue serves as an encyclopaedic research tool for further scholarly investigation: it not only presents a lively and coherent picture of Senfl's œuvre, but also helps to explore the broader musical culture of his time. At the same time, the in-depth presentation and analysis of Senfl's music provides Early Music performers with new information on repertory that adds to the soundscape of the Renaissance. Stefan Gasch and Sonja Tröster are editors of the New Senfl Edition and lecturers at the University of Vienna as well as the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

In this volume of the NSE, all five-part motets by Ludwig Senfl are published for the first time. It contains Marian motets such as Mater digna Dei / Ave, sanctissima Maria, which reflect the deep Marian devotion at the court of Duke Wilhelm IV, psalm motets in which Senfl sometimes refers to Josquin Desprez in different ways (e.g. Miserere mei, Deus), or works like Qui prophetice prompsisti, whose Tertia pars Vita in ligno moritur was extraordinarily widespread in the 16th century. In addition, the volume offers for the first time an edition of Senfl's large-scale Te Deum laudamus as well as various multi-text motets. Compositions such as Christ resurgens ex mortuis / Christ has risen show the points of contact between the spiritual Latin and vernacular spheres, other works - for example the Tanto tempore vobiscum / Philippe qui videt me - follow the tradition of the cantus firmus motet, in which Senfl enrolls sustainably. Ludwig Senfl - key figure in the generation of composers between Heinrich Isaac and Orlando di Lasso - began his career in 1498 at the court of Emperor Maximilian I, before he worked at the court of Duke Wilhelm IV in Munich from 1523. Much appreciated by his contemporaries, his central position in early music historiography was anchored by J. N. Forkel and A. W. Ambros. Despite the outstanding quality of Senfl's work, a large part of his oeuvre has not yet been available in a modern edition. The New Senfl Edition (NSE) closes this gap and offers a comprehensive overview of the composer's work on the basis of the latest research. The first two volumes of the NSE present for the first time the entire surviving corpus of the four-part motets, whose wide textual and compositional range demonstrates how the composer internalized international musical trends and developed them further in an innovative way.
