Proceedings of Geo-Frontiers 2005, held in Austin, Texas, January 24-26, 2005. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 32 papers on the design of slopes and retaining structures that continue to pose challenges to geotechnical engineers. These include long-term performance under static and seismic conditions and in harsh environments, issues related to use of nontraditional backfills, and the reliability of the constructed systems throughout the design life. Several challenges related to design and construction of slopes and retaining structures are addressed with the increased utilization of geosynthetics. The level of activities associated with geosynthetics reinforcement range from paved and unpaved roads to the construction of segmental retaining walls and slopes. Field and laboratory performance of retaining walls and slopes under seismic and static conditions are presented. National and international experts discuss performance of reinforced and unreinforced pavement systems, slopes and retaining structures in harsh environments and under severe conditions.

Significant Changes to Seismic Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10: An Illustrated Guide focuses on the revisions to the seismic load requirements set forth in the latest edition of the Standard for minimum design loads. Mirroring the organization of the seismic chapters in ASCE 7-10, this handy reference briefly summarizes each change to the seismic provisions that might affect actual practice or enforcement and immediately follows up with the precise wording of the change. The impact of each update is explained in clear, straightforward language accompanied by diagrams, examples, and color photographs and illustrations to enrich the reader's understanding. Significant Changes to the Seismic Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10: An Illustrated Guide translates the changes to the seismic provisions of ASCE Standard 7-10 into a form readily accessible by structural engineers, architects, contractors, building officials and inspectors, and allied professionals.

Sponsored by the Task Committee on Seismic Isolation of the Seismic Effects Committee of the Dynamic Effects Technical Activity Committee of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This primer describes the current state of seismic isolation technology and highlights issues and concerns that are unique to the design of isolated structures. This concise book is full of practical knowledge related to base isolation design. The report includes the fundamentals of seismic isolation, the design of isolated structures, analysis, and testing. This book emphasizes practical issues, rather than theoretical issues, making it complementary to textbooks on earthquake engineering. The overviews in this report make the subject accessible to structural engineers who have not been formally trained in base isolation design and to architects and students in a first-level engineering course.
