This dissertation by Alma Memišević examines the role of school-age educare centres (SAEC) in Sweden, focusing on how science and technology are integrated into their teaching. The study utilizes critical discourse analysis and ethnographic methods, including video observations, field notes, and interviews, to explore the pedagogical shifts in SAECs. Traditionally seen as spaces for play and children's interests, SAECs are now transitioning towards educational pedagogical models due to political efforts to enhance academic performance. The research highlights the challenges faced by SAEC staff in implementing goal-directed teaching, balancing traditional methods with innovative, interdisciplinary approaches, and managing group-oriented strategies, especially in schools for children with intellectual disabilities.
