Abstract

Author of now-classic photobooks such as Waffenruhe and Berlin-Wedding, Berlin-based photographer Michael Schmidt (1945-2014) was acclaimed in his lifetime for his black-and-white, documentary-style depictions of his native city. This is the first full appraisal of his work, featuring numerous images of working material such as work prints or book dummies, as well as archival material?invitation cards, posters and exhibition views. Essays by Ute Eskildsen, Janos Frecot, Peter Galassi, Heinz Liesbrock and Thomas Weski, who worked closely with Schmidt on various projects during his lifetime, complement these materials.00Schmidt was born on 6 October 1945 in East Berlin, five months after the German surrender. His family crossed to West Berlin before the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. His earliest series on Berlin, Stadtlandschaft (Urban Landscapes) (1974-75) and Berlin, Stadtbilder (Berlin, Urban Images) (1976-80), established the idiom he would pursue for the rest of his life.

Abstract

Michael Schmidt is one of Germany's most famous post-war photographers. In his out-of-print artist's book "Ein-heit", he traces the universal iconography of political systems and the images of humankind they project. Addressing the complex relationship between the individual and the state, he asks how we can resist the loss of individuality inherent in systems of mass control. In his uncompromising view of reality, Michael Schmidt mixes photographs of already published photographs with those of his own making to the point where reality and imagination merge, creating a densely woven structure of associations and emotions. The second, actual edition of this artist's book meets the first edition from 1996.

Abstract

In Waffenruhe Michael Schmidt brings together surprising combinations of images to express a generations dystopian sense of life shortly before the fall of the Wall. Schmidt evokes a world of ruptures and absences that eschews a confident, comprehensive point of view. The images work with Schleefs text to create a brusque, entirely individual perspective on the fragility of human existence. One cannot escape that in the divided city, even if one tries to ignore it. And it absolutely pervades the sense of Michael Schmidts book. The works very title, Waffenruhe ceasefire, or literally, fighting peace implies an uneasy dichotomy, an unreal state of temporal stasis. And which sums up the sense of crazy unreality which characterises Berlin. The city is a living museum of 20th-century history. It is a memorial, an island stopped in time while the rest of the world moves on still occupied by foreign troops, still ostensibly on a war footing. Despite the modernist architecture, the forced gaiety, the punks, and the vibrant art scene, the city remains locked in 1945. Gerry Badger
