"Women artists: The Linda Nochlin Reader brings together thirty essential essays from throughout Nochlin's career, including two written specially for this book, making this the definitive anthology of her writing about women in art. Her major thematic texts, such as "Women Artists After the French Revolution" and "Starting from Scratch: The Beginnings of Feminist Art History," appear alongside the landmark 1971 essay and its rejoinder "'Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?' Thirty Years After." Also included are entries focusing on a selection of major women artists, such as Mary Cassatt, Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Kiki Smith, Miwa Yanagi, and Sophie Calle, as well as concise biographies of all the artists discussed in the book and a complete bibliography of Nochlin's publications."--Rabat de la jaquette.

From gallery openings to dance performances to visiting lectures to exhibitions to classroom projects, the book gives a rich historical and visual account of the school's activities, supplemented by details of specific events, reminiscences by faculty and students, accounts of artists' talks, and notes on memorable controversies. A partial list of visiting artists and faculty members at NSCAD would include Joseph Beuys, Sol LeWitt, Gerhard Richter, Dan Graham, Mel Bochner, Lucy Lippard, John Baldessari, Hans Haacke, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Frank, Jenny Holzer, Robert Morris, Eric Fischl, and Dara Birnbaum. Kasper Koenig and Benjamin Buchloh ran the NSCAD Press, publishing books by Hollis Frampton, Lawrence Weiner, Donald Judd, Daniel Buren, Michael Asher, Martha Rosler, and Michael Snow, among others. The Lithography Workshop produced early works by many of today's masters, including John Baldessari, Vito Acconci, and Claes Oldenburg. With The Last Art College, Garry Kennedy, the college's visionary president at the time, gives us the long-awaited documentary history of NSCAD during a formative era. "How did a small art college in Nova Scotia become the epicenter of art education -and to a large extent of the postmimimalist and conceptual art world itself - in the 1960s and 1970s ? Like the unorthodox experiments and rich human resources that made Black Mountain College an improbable center of art a generation earlier, the activities and artists at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (aka NSCAD) in the 1970s redefined the means and methods of art education and the shape of art far beyond Halifax.

This is an anthology of essays that first appeared in The Artist as Curator, a series that occupied eleven issues of Mousse from no. 41 (December 2013/January 2014) to no. 51 (December 2015/January 2016). It set out to examine what was then a profoundly influential but still under-studied phenomenon, a history that had yet to be written: the fundamental role artists have played as curators. Taking that ontologically ambiguous thing we call “the exhibition” as a critical medium, artists have often radically rethought conventional forms of exhibition making. This anthology surveys seminal examples of such exhibitions from the postwar to the present, including rare documents and illustrations. It includes an introduction and the twenty essays that first appeared in Mousse, a newly commissioned afterword by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and two additional essays that appear here for the first time, discussing twenty-two exhibitions by the Avant-Garde Argentinian Visual Artists Group; Mel Bochner; Marcel Broodthaers; Hank Bull, Shen Fan, Zhou Tiehai, Shi Yong, and Ding Yi; John Cage; Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro, and the CalArts Feminist Art Program; Collaborative Projects Inc.
