Abstract

The mediatisation and the development of start-up implemented in a fast growing environment is increasing from year to year. However, the term “scale-up” is still not well known and understood by everyone. It appears that the Walloon region has a low rate of scale-up which is unfortunate if the impact on employment, growth and knowledge that those firms bring in the region where they belong to is considered.According to the literature, an equity gap between the start-up stage and scale-up stage could explain the difficulty faced by entrepreneurs to cross the bridge. The main purpose of this dissertation is to understand if this equity gap represents the main reason of the weakness of scale-up in Wallonia or if there are other reasons explaining this phenomenon. The literature review gives to the lector the opportunity to have a better understanding of the subject and to know what are saying different authors on the subject. Two case studies about successful scale-up put the light on the different “growth pains” and challenges faced by entrepreneurs. It appears that those ones are various and not only financial as it may have been suggested. These case studies are followed by the results of various interviews of different actors present “on the ground”. These interviews highlight the previous challenges covered during the case studies and add new ones. They are mainly about the difficulty to adapt the company’s structure to the growth, the owner’s personality and the environment. In light of the above, it may be concluded that the equity gap is not the reason why we have so few scale-up in Wallonia. It may be one of the factor but certainly not the main reason. The results of this master thesis may be interesting for entrepreneurs that are running a fast growing business and that are willing to go to the next level.

Abstract

The use of microalgae currently benefits from a growing interest in different fields. It is the reflection of an enormous potential for several commercial applications. As an innovative company, Prayon is considering diversifying its activities in the sector of microalgae as far as the opportunities are coherent with its own strategy. This project thesis conducted within Prayon consisted in the realisation of the first phase of the innovation process. The aim of the work was first to identify different activities in which Prayon could diversify. The choice was made taking into account the strategy of Prayon as well as the different openings that microalgae offer. The second part of the project aimed for the analyse and evaluation of these activities. In order to collect comprehensive information on the subject, desk and field research was conducted. The field research involved the interview of various experts. A multicriteria evaluation grid was established and the five activities were rated, allowing us to identify the most interesting choices for Prayon. From this evaluation it has emerged that the best activity for Prayon is the scaling up of the harvesting, filtration and extraction processes for companies active in the production of microalgae for food additives. The potential business model of this activity has been described in the Business Model Canvas.

Abstract

Abstract

Due to its high consumption and unequal distribution of primary lithium resources such as minerals and brines, lithium, a key component in LIBs, is experiencing an economic and supply crisis. Thus, it has been added to the EU critical raw material list since 2020. And a target of 50% lithium recycling from LIBs is set by the end of 2027 in Directive 2006/66/EC. This research aims to develop an economical and environmentally friendly process for recycling lithium from the leachate after LIB recycling. It will benefit in meeting the EU lithium recycling target, industrial growth, sustainability in the lithium value chain, the circular economy, and industrial wastewater regulations. In the methodology, crystallization experiments were carried out by cooling the Li solution at 1 °C for 20 to 48 hours to remove Na impurities. Moreover, chemical precipitation experiments were conducted to precipitate Li2CO3. The pH of the solution was adjusted with NaOH and heated to the desired temperature, followed by the saturated sodium carbonate addition. The reaction time was 60 minutes to reach equilibrium. The slurry was filtered, and the wet precipitates were heated at 100 °C for 1 hour. Moreover, the same methodology was applied to the solution with chloride chemistry after ion exchange resin. From the results, crystallization removed 49.67% Na from the Li solution in 20 hours. In chemical precipitation, temperature, pH value, Li concentration, and CO3/Li+ ratio are observed to be influential parameters on recovery and grade. The Li recovery of 80.91% with 96.40% Li2CO3 purity was obtained at 95 °C, CO3/Li+ 1.075, and 10.45 g/L Li concentration after crystallization. The purity can be improved to 99.56% by repulping precipitates with hot water with minimal loss of Li recovery and less than 0.42% Na content. On the other hand, the solution after ion exchange resin obtained 80.44% recovery at 70 °C, CO3/Li+ 1.0, and 8.32 g/L Li with 99.40% purity without repulping and 0.26% Na. Thus, the solution with less Na impurity and chloride chemistry needs less temperature to precipitate lithium carbonate.Nevertheless, during the economic analysis, the ion exchange resin phase appeared costly. As the elution step gives lithium concentration of 0.9 g/L, it requires a substantial amount of energy to concentrate lithium. Conversely, the experimental outcomes after the crystallization phase revealed cost-effectiveness and fewer energy requirements across the entire process. Consequently, an economically viable flowsheet for the targeted recovery of lithium as lithium carbonate from the leaching solution after the LIB recycling is formulated and presents a potential industrial proposition.

Abstract

A rapid growth in various industries and domestic activities is resulting in a huge amount of wastewater. Various types of wastewaters, such as textile, municipal, dairy, pharmaceutical, swine, and aquaculture, etc., are produced regularly by respective industries. These wastewaters are rich in nutrient content and promote eutrophication in the ecosystem and pose a threat to flora and fauna. According to an estimate, eutrophication causes losses of almost 2 billion US dollars annually, affecting real estate and fishing activities. Treatment of wastewater is a costly process and recently wastewater treatment with simultaneous energy production has received more attention. Microorganisms can be used to recover nutrients from wastewater and produce bioenergy (biodiesel, biohydrogen, bioelectricity, methane, etc.). A better understanding of the composition of various types of wastewaters and the development of technologies like anaerobic digestion (AD), microbial fuel cell (MFC), and microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) can help to make wastewater-based biorefinery a reality. To provide an overall overview to students, teachers, and researchers on wastewater to bioenergy technology ten chapters are included in this book.
