Nel cinquantenario della morte del poeta Camillo Sbarbaro un incontro di italianisti ad Arezzo (nel 2017) presso l'Accademia Petrarca ne ha ripercorso la storia umana e letteraria. Ligure, di Santa Margherita, Sbarbaro a soli ventisei anni pubblica la raccolta di poesie Pianissimo e nello stesso anno si reca a Firenze dove incontra Ardengo Soffici, Giovanni Papini, Dino Campana, Ottone Rosai e altri artisti e letterati che ruotavano intorno alla rivista «La Voce».Richiamato alle armi nel 1917 il poeta scrive al fronte la raccolta poetica Trucioli, pubblicata da Vallecchi nel 1920. Sarà proprio Trucioli a fargli conoscere, un altro "grande ligure": Eugenio Montale.Tra il 1928 e il 1933 Sbarbaro viaggia soprattutto in Europa cogliendone i nuovi venti letterari e politici. Al 1933 risale il nuovo libro Calcomanie che, a causa della censura, circolerà solo nel 1940 in una ventina di copie dattiloscritte. Nel 1945 Sbarbaro inizia un'intensa attività di traduzione di autori francesi e greci.Gli ultimi anni di lavoro letterario dopo il denso volume Fuochi fatui del 1956 lo vedono impegnato solo in piccole raccolte di prosa: Gocce (1963), Il "Nostro" e nuove Gocce (1964), Contagocce (1965), Bolle di sapone (1966), Vedute di Genova (1966) e Quisquilie pubblicato poco tempo prima della sua scomparsa (1967). Sbarbaro, pur nella sua produzione "misurata" e nel suo vivere appartato, ha rappresentato una delle voci più limpide e alte della lirica italiana del Novecento.

Focusing on the works of Camillo Sbarbaro and Giovanna Bemporad, this book offers the first in-depth analysis of poetic translations of Greek tragedy in 20th-century Italian poetry. The close examination of the linguistic and ideological diversity embedded in these authors' works shows how narratives of Greek tragedy shaped their poetic universe, and how their work influenced the Greek paradigm in return. The reader is presented with a textual analysis of Sbarbaro's and Bemporad's translations, as well as a discussion of larger cultural patterns. This volume provides a fresh perspective on the pedagogical commitment of the Italian poets and their roles as translators of classical studies. The web of relationships and historical context in which these authors are placed provide an understanding of their importance for a wider discourse on translation in Italy and Europe in the 1940s. Caterina Paoli's original analysis of Sbarbaro's and Bemporad's poetic translations and her emphasis on their relevance for translation studies, women's writing and classical reception, fills a significant gap in current scholarship on the translation of ancient literature in the Italian poetic community.
