Abstract

During the turbulent Samnite wars between Rome and the Samnite communities in southern central Italy, Samnium's Iron Age high fortifications played a crucial role. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the present study manages to significantly expand our understanding of these appendices. At the macro level, methods of physical geography, spatial distribution, and topographical location of the elevation fortifications allow to be analyzed for their strategic aspects. Construction and use of individual finding sites are at the heart of archaeological investigation at the meso level, while at the micro level, a selected case study with extensive survey results provides in-depth insights. In addition, the book contains a pointed catalogue of all known altitude fortifications as well as a new mapping of the archaeological sites of discovery. In this way, it is possible to direct the focus beyond the one-sided narratives of Roman historiography to the near-scriptless cultures of this region. The integration of archaeological findings and literary sources makes the historical events that shaped the Samnite Wars appear in new light. This book thus not only provides an in-depth analysis of Samnium's altitude fortifications, but also expands our understanding of the history of Italy and the rise of Rome to a hegemonic power through archaeological findings.

Abstract

This book focuses on the region of Samnium in Italy, where a rich blend of historical, literary, epigraphic, numismatic, and archaeological evidence supports a fresh perspective on the complexity and dynamism of a part of the ancient Mediterranean that is normally regarded as marginal. 0This volume presents new ways of looking at ancient Italian communities that did not leave written accounts about themselves but played a key role in the early development of Rome, first as staunch opponents and later as key allies. It combines written and archaeological evidence to form a new understanding of the ancient inhabitants of Samnium during the last six centuries BC, how they identified themselves, how they developed unique forms of social and political organisation, and how they became entangled with Rome's expanding power and the impact that this had on their daily lives.
