This volume offers a comprehensive depiction of the development of the gymnasium during the Roman Empire. Literary evidence for the Roman view of the Hellenistic gymnasium is discussed along with archaeological finds that suggest the transformation of gymnasia into facilities for general recreation. Other themes that are explored include the role of youths in the gymnasium, the connection between education in the gymnasium and the aristocratic class, the cult of the Muses and musical contests, and the impact of gymnasia on the educational ideal. In 2000, the hardly 30 year-old architects Nicola Baserga und Christian Mozzetti won their first competition for the "Berghütte Cristallina" in Val Bedretto. Since then, they have managed to win eight 1st Prizes, have produced a number of concise buildings and have worked on numerous projects.

The young Fribourg architect and his team have already produced a notable number of high-quality buildings: small school buildings, for instance for the school in St-Cierges VD, which is placed with great topographic precision, the exciting ensemble of the vocational school in Domdidier FR and the cleverly conceived extension to the multifunctional hall in Sâles FR.
