La muerte de Cristo fue entendida desde los inicios del cristianismo como el misterio central de redencion. Muy tempranamente se extendio la idea de su valor expiatorio y la cruz se entendio a la luz del sacrificio de expiacion hebreo. Para el hombre moderno esta lectura resulta dificil. Dios Padre pide el sacrificio de su Hijo para conceder su perdon? Cual es el significado biblico de la expiacion y del sacrificio? La teologia contemporanea se ha hecho cargo de estas preguntas y ha procurado responder desde las raices mismas del mensaje biblico. El autor ofrece una vision panoramica de la discusion actual y de los principales nucleos del debate. In this study of the ritual of animal sacrifice in ancient Greek religion, Judaism, and Christianity in the period between 100 BC and AD 200, Maria-Zoe Petropoulou explores the attitudes of early Christians towards the realities of sacrifice in the Greek East and in the Jerusalem Temple (up to AD 70). Contrary to other studies in this area, she demonstrates that the process by which Christianity finally separated its own cultic code from the strong tradition of animal sacrifice was a slow and difficult one. Petropoulou places special emphasis on the fact that Christians gave completely new meanings to the term `sacrifice'. She also explores the question why, if animal sacrifice was of prime importance in the eastern Mediterranean at this time, Christians should ultimately have rejected it.

This book addresses two crucial, related questions in current research on the Epistle to the Hebrews: when and where did Jesus offer himself? And what role does Jesus' death play both in Hebrews' soteriology as a whole, and specifically in Jesus' high-priestly self-offering? The work argues that the cross is not when and where Jesus offers himself, but it is what he offers. After his resurrection, appointment to high priesthood, and ascent to heaven, Jesus offers himself to God in the inner sanctum of the heavenly tabernacle, and what he offers to God is the soteriological achievement enacted in his death. Hebrews figures blood, in both the Levitical cult and the Christ-event, as a medium of exchange, a life given for life owed. Represented as blood, Christ's death is both means of access and material offered: what he achieved in his death is what he offered to God in heaven.
