Au XVIe siècle, les premiers colons chinois arrivent sur l'île Taïwan, où vivent des populations malayo-polynésiennes. Au XXIe siècle, les aborigènes, descendants de ces populations, sont 500.000, sur une population de plus de 23 millions d'habitants. On vend de l'exotisme aux touristes en tissant un fantasme, celui d'un terrain vierge dans les marges de la civilisation de l'empire japonais, allant jusqu'à dénuder les aborigènes pour insister sur leur barbarie supposée. Avant, bien plus tard, de commencer à les rhabiller pour suggérer les progrès de l'oeuvre civilisatrice coloniale, tandis que les cartes postales continuent à représenter leur corps dénudé. Le colonialisme japonais articule l'ethnie et l'identité à l'aide de la photographie et crée ainsi un imaginaire propre de son empire en expansion."
