The poetry of the extremely prolific and versatile 'Abbāsid poet Ibn al-Rūmī is examined in this book. Part 1, The Poet, reconstructs the poet's life and times providing the background for Part II, The Poetry, which traces the influences in Ibn al-Rūmī's distinctive poetic style and themes. This provides a glimpse into a rather fluid period in Arabic literary history when the boundary between poetry and prose was becoming increasingly permeable, due to the emergence of the so-called "secretary-poets," and to the prevalence and importance of the munāżarah , or disputation. Part III, The Poem, analyzes the poet's celebrated 282-line poem commemorating the quashing of the Zanj rebellion. The towering architectonics and sophisticated organization of this poem provide an ideal opportunity to explore Ibn al-Rūmī's poetic contribution.

My verse resembles the bread of Egypt-night passes over it, and you cannot eat it any more. Devour it the moment it is fresh, before the dust settles upon it. Its place is the warm climate of the heart; in this world it dies of cold. Like a fish it quivered for an instant on dry land, another moment and you see it is cold. Even if you eat it imagining it is fresh, it is necessary to conjure up many images. What you drink is really your own imagination; it is no old tale, my good man. Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207-73), legendary Persian Muslim poet, theologian, and mystic, wrote poems acclaimed through the centuries for their powerful spiritual images and provocative content, which often described Rumi's love for God in romantic or erotic terms. His vast body of work includes more than three thousand lyrics and odes. This volume includes four hundred poems selected by renowned Rumi scholar A. J. Arberry, who provides here one of the most comprehensive and adept English translations of this enigmatic genius. Mystical Poems is the definitive resource for anyone seeking an introduction to or an enriched understanding of one of the world's greatest poets. "Rumi is one of the world's greatest lyrical poets in any language-as well as probably the most accessible and approachable representative of Islamic civilization for Western students."-James W. Morris, Oberlin College

This is a book on Rumi's life, his poetry, his thought, and his influence. Rumi's work forms one of the pillars of the Sufi orders, particularly the Mevlevi order, better known in the West as the Whirling Dervishes. In this book Rumi emerges not only as a spiritual master, but also as a fully human being grounded firmly in the Koran and in classical Islamic mysticism. The light of the Divine Sun, in its Beauty and Majesty, manifested itself for Rumi through the person of Shams of Tabriz. Transformed by this light, consumed by this fire, Mowlana Rumi saw the world in a new light. Everywhere he perceived God's Grandeur and his Grace. The book also discusses the theological premises upon which Rumi's work rests, his attitude to the problems of free will and predestination, and his analysis of the mystical stages and stations. The book not only gives a very rich analysis of Rumi's language and poetical art, but also a picture of medieval Konya, whose features the mystical poet transforms and transfigures.

This is the first systematic examination of the esoteric significance of the bawdy tales and explicit sexual passages present in Rūmī’s (d. 1273) Mathnawī , a masterpiece of medieval Perso-Islamic mystical literature and theosophic teachings. Using the relevant features of postmodern theories as strategic conceptual tools, and drawing on the recent interpretations of medieval kabbalistic texts, it is a fascinating examination of the link between the dynamics of eroticism and esotericism operative in Rūmī’s Mathnawī . In some of these bawdy tales, the phallus is used as an esoteric symbol. The book concludes that these tales are used primarily to communicate esoteric secrets, particularly when this communication is contemplated along gender lines, mediated through erotic imagery, or expressed in sexual terms.

"When the Ottoman Empire met its demise in the early twentieth century, the new republic closed down the Sufi orders, with the rationale that they were anti-modern. Yet the nascent nation, faced with defining its cultural heritage, soon began to emphasize the Turkish ethnicity of the Sufi saints, and, in the case of saints like Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, Hacı Bektaş Veli, and Yunus Emre, to focus on universalist themes found in their poetry and legends, such as love, peace, fellowship, and tolerance between ethnic and religious communities. With this reinterpretation of their legacies (part of a broader ideological shift toward secularism), these saints have now come to be considered the great Turkish humanists. Today their veneration plays a greater role in the nationalistic preservation of Turkish culture than in a remembered heritage of Islamic religion. Humanist Mystics is the first book to examine Islam and secularism within Turkish nationalist ideology through the lens of the commemorated saints. Soileau surveys the Anatolian and Turkish religious and political history as context for his closer attention to the lives and influence of the three Sufi saints. By comparing pre-modern hagiographic and scholarly representations with twentieth-century monographs, literary works, artistic media, and commemorative ceremonies, he shows how the saints have been transformed into humanist mystics, and how this change has led to debates about their character and relevance"--Provided by publisher.
