"Thomas Ruff (born in 1958), from the Becher class of internationally renowned photo artists, is a master of conceptual photography. His work, which contains neither narrative nor anecdotal moments and makes equal use of analog and digital production techniques, is an expression of a thoroughly scientific working method, which dissects its object, reassembles it and in so doing combines analysis and original creation. He became known in the 1980s with oversized and hyperrealist color portraits of his friends and fellow students at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. It was he who discovered the Diasec process for photography, a method borrowed from advertising of framing photographic prints and thus liberating the photograph from the ghetto of print cabinets. Since then, large-format photographic works have been proudly displayed on museum and gallery walls worldwide. [Title] presents selected photographs from all of the artist's series to date, starting with his small Interiors and large Portraits, to the starry skies and night shots, the nudes, recycled from pornographic material he found on the Internet, and abstract Substrates, to his stellar compositions based on astronomical photographs from ESO and NASA."--P [4] of cover.

The numerous photographic series of Thomas Ruff (born 1958) are consistently compelling. In larger-than-life-sized portraits we encounter the intent gazes of young adults. Sterile building façades serve as a commentary on the misery of urban sprawl. Pixelated nudes from pornographic websites render important details almost indecipherable while underscoring the power of these images. In exhibitions the photographer shows large-scale prints, which are produced in a very limited number. However, he consistently produces small-format photographic prints using a range of reproductive techniques, which are usually produced in editions of 30 or more to make them affordable for a broader art audience. This catalogue raisonné of editions was prepared by Jörg Schellmann in close cooperation with Thomas Ruff and is based on the most up-to-date research. The works are organized chronologically - not according to the year the image was created but its year of production. The volume presents all signed and numbered editions by the artist from 1988 onward

For over thirty years Thomas Ruff has approached every genre of photography and coolly reinvented it. One of the greatest artists to use photography in the 21st century, Ruff came of age in the 1980s alongside Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth, in what was to become known as the Dusseldorf School. Creating photographic images on the scale of history paintingbut with a cool hyperrealism, Ruff moves from the micro to the macro, from portraying friends to picturing the cosmos. He also oscillates between the laboratory and the archive, experimenting with digital technologies to create photograms with virtual objects and rescuing discarded press photographs to reveal lost histories.Unlike many other publications on his work which assess Ruff's work series by series, this catalogue provides a thematic exploration of his output including portraits, disasters, sky and cityscapes, internet nudes, photograms, manga images, magnetically generated images and found photographs.

Elle accompagne l'exposition Faces now.

"At the moment, photography is in a phase of change in which an altered conception of the documentary factor is emerging. It is not so much a matter of the portrayal or representation of reality, but rather of an artistically well-grounded idea of the world." So says Thomas Weski in his essay in this big, bold, and truly essential compendium of documentary and almost-documentary photographs. Featured artists include Diane Arbus, Tina Barney, Laurenz Berges, Dirk Braeckman, David Claerbout, Luc Delahaye, Rineike Dijkstra, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Patrick Faigenbaum, Stephen Gill, Paul Graham, Andreas Gursky, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Scott McFarland, Hans van der Meer, Boris Mikhailov, Martin Parr, Judith Joy Ross, Thomas Ruff, Taryn Simon, Alec Soth, Heidi Specker, Jules Spinatsch, Thomas Struth, Larry Sultan, Juergen Teller, Wolfgang Tillmans and Jeff Wall. Among the many fine features of this book are several paper changes, a section on the illustrations and artists' biographies. (Deuxième de couverture)

During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, Andreas.
