Viennese émigré architect Bernard Rudofsky (1905–1988) is most frequently recalled for curating “Architecture without Architects,” the famous 1964 photography exhibition of vernacular, preindustrial structures at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Far from simply a romantic or nostalgic invocation of cultures lost to industrial modernity, Rudofsky’s exhibition drew on decades of speculations about modern architecture and urbanism, particularly their semantic, technological, institutional, commercial, and geopolitical influences.Focusing on Rudofsky’s encounters with Japan in the 1950s—he described postwar Japan as a “rear-view mirror” of the American way of life—architectural historian Felicity D. Scott revisits the architect’s readings of the vernacular both in the United States and Japan, which resonate with his attempts to imagine architecture and cities that refused to communicate in a normative sense. In a contemporary world saturated with visual information, Rudofsky’s unconventional musings take on a heightened resonance.

This book, 'Boredom and the Architectural Imagination' by Andreea Mihalache, explores the intersection of modern architecture and the concept of boredom. It delves into the philosophical and critical perspectives of notable architects and artists such as Bernard Rudofsky, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Saul Steinberg. The author examines how boredom influences architectural design and the creative processes behind it, offering insights into resisting and reimagining ennui in the context of 20th-century modern architecture. Through a blend of historical analysis and personal reflection, Mihalache aims to uncover new dimensions of architectural thought and practice. This scholarly work is intended for students, architects, and readers interested in architectural theory and philosophy.

In rural China, an informal wave of building catalysed by economic and social developments has rendered some villages unrecognisable. This building boom, taking place in a context of limited regulations, has created densities more often found in urban areas. At the same time, the rapid transformation of rural villages has generated some remarkable hybrid experiments where rural builders use generic construction methods to adapt, modify, graft, cleave and wrap traditional vernacular typologies. These typologies have existed for hundreds of years and represent an accretion of localised building knowledge and cultural identity. Where often these typologies are preserved and maintained as tourist destinations, this book looks at those instances where families transform them to account for new ways of living. By looking closely at these transformations, As Found Houses identifies innovative, informal design responses that negotiate between traditional housing forms and the changing conditions of the rural village. The book presents the intelligent and surprising solutions applied to house typologies conceived by builders in 4 regions of rural China. Using photographs, axonometric drawings and interviews with the villagers who live in these hybrid experiments, the book situates design solutions within the context of their larger human narratives, thereby challenging ossified understandings of vernacular architecture that treat historical and cultural tradition as static. The book argues that the manifold evolution of the vernacular is part of the every-day practice of the villagers’ lives, and that architecture for them is very much still a home. As Found Houses is a guide to the surprising design decisions found in the domestic architecture of rural China and a resource for thinking about contemporary design.

This richly illustrated book is a monument to modern urban construction in Naples. New photos by French photographer Cyrille Weiner, new sketches of important details and around 100 drawings show significant buildings with a wide range of different characteristics, dating from the years 1930-1960. They reveal how this Southern Italian metropolis developed its own form of Modernism, one that combined Mediterranean culture with local materials and a strong internationalist spirit. The book's line of enquiry and presentation follow the same methodology as with Paris Haussmann: A Model's Relevance (Park Books, 2017), which was produced by the same team, analysing the construction of Paris. This new publication about the legendary harbor city of Naples is just as attractively presented, with plenty of photos, a selection of essays and descriptive texts, along with sketches of important architectonic details, supplemented by plans and sections of all the documented buildings. The result is a lively portrait of a fascinating city that is both famous and infamous, but whose qualities and individuality in terms of architecture and urban development really should be better known.
