The year was 778. Charlemagne, starting homeward after an expedition onto the Iberian Peninsula, left his nephew, Count Roland, in command of a rear guard. As Roland and his troops moved through the Pyrenees, a fierce enemy swooped down and annihilated them. Whether the attackers were Moors, Basques, Gascons, or Aquitainians is still disputed. The massacre soon passed into legend, preserved but at the same time expanded and interpreted in oral tradition and written accounts.Dormant after the late Middle Ages, the legend began to inspire literary works even before the discovery and publication

Diese ambitionierte Untersuchung aller Eigennamen des Rolandsliedes stützt sich für die Geographica auf eine systematische Erfassung der einschlägigen Literatur von der Antike bis nach 1100, für die Namen der Hauptpersonen (Marsilie, Baligant, Ganelon, Turpin, Naimes, Olivier, Roland, Karl) auf eine Durcharbeitung (nahezu) der gesamten urkundlichen Überlieferung Frankreichs und seiner Nachbarregionen von 778 bis ins frühe 12. Jahrhundert. Auf dieser Basis gelingen für die nichtchristliche Seite unter anderem detaillierte (und strukturell einfache!) Erklärungen des Völker-Katalogs, der überdachenden Organisation von Baligants Reich, des muslimischen Nordafrika, des Korpus der Zwölf Anti-Pairs sowie der ‘Heiden’götter. Ähnlich umfassend sind die Ergebnisse für die christliche Seite. Selbst die Namen der Waffen erweisen sich, indem sie sehr dezent auf ihren jeweiligen Besitzer abgestimmt sind, als kleines strukturiertes Ganzes. Das Gesamtergebnis ist eindeutig: Das erhaltene Lied ist bis in kleinere Szenen hinein straffer und profunder durchstrukturiert als allgemein angenommen, es ist zudem erheblich welthaltiger, und es hat eine sehr lange Vorgeschichte, die sich in den Umrissen, wenn auch mit abnehmender Sicherheit, fast bis zur fränkischen Niederlage von 778 zurückverfolgen lässt. This ambitious examination of all the proper names in the Chanson de Roland shows that it is finely structured even up to the smallest scenes, and substantially worldlier than has been generally assumed. This makes it possible to retrace the outlines of the Chanson’s long prehistory, though with diminishing certainty, as far back as the Frankish defeat of 778.

Twelfth-century France has been described as the key to many of the most important developments of medieval civilization. Nowhere is this description more accurate than in the domain of poetic invention. The years 1050 to 1200 witnessed the development of a brilliant body of vernacular narrative that not only expressed the complexity of its own time but also bequeathed to posterity a wide gamut of creative possibilities.Although much has been written about the works of this period, Karl Uitti offers the first critically orientated overview of this poetry as poetry. In the sections devoted to the Songs of Alexis and Roland he studies the narrative as it serves, in various ways, truths exterior to its own organization.
