In Rietveld meubels om zelf te maken zijn tot in detail de bekendste en meest kenmerkende meubelontwerpen van Gerrit Rietveld gedocumenteerd. Het boek bevat werktekeningen, maten, details, materiaalstaten en aanwijzigingen voor het in elkaar zetten van een meubel alsmede historische gegevens van elk behandeld meubel. In dit boek komt een breed scala aan Rietveld meubels beschikbaar voor de zelfbouwer, waaronder diverse stoelen (natuurlijk ook de beroemde roodblauwe), tafels en tafeltjes, kasten, kindermeubilair, banken, lampen, bureaus en een dozenkast. Door zelf meubels van Rietveld te maken doorloopt men de maatverhoudingen, de stabiliteit, de verbindingen en montagevolgorde van de kleinste knoop tot de ruimtelijkheid van het uiteindelijke meubel. Alsof het maken van, het zitten op en het kijken naar het meubel weer net zo met elkaar verbonden zijn als het bij Rietveld tot stand kwam.

Summary: Few know the full scope of Rietveld's oeuvre. He designed on every scale: from a bus stop to a small village. Commonly regarded as the most important architect within the De Stijl group, Rietveld was also one of the founders of CIAM. He continued his experiments right up to his death in 1964. His work and teachings have been a major influence in the world of architecture and design. Rietveld's Universe is a comprehensive publication presenting the results of new insights and research, including contributions by international leading scholars on t he subject. Focusing on the context in which Rietveld's work should be placed, this book addresses his interpretation of space and the way he designed it, as well as the mutual influences between his work and that of contemporaries such as Mondrian, Van Doesburg, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto.

Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) is perhaps Holland's best-known architect. His Schröder House in Utrecht from 1924 has achieved iconic status. In fact, Rietveld built around 100 houses, and of these very little is known. Photographer Arjan Bronkhorst (b. 1972), who established his credentials in 2013 with the bestseller Grachtenhuizen/Amsterdam Canal Houses, went in search of these unknown Rietveld houses. He photographed their interiors and residents, travelling as far as the United States. Light and space are what characterise Rietveld's houses. Sobriety is a basic principle in his designs. Only appreciated by a small group of intellectual clients who commissioned Rietveld to design an avant-garde house. Authors Willemijn Zwikstra and Marc van den Eerenbeemt explored the archives and interviewed current residents about living in a Rietveld house. As Rietveld expert Ida van Zijl notes in her introduction: it is high time for a new publication: a book that puts the resident first, just as Rietveld thought a house as a setting for life.
