This collection of essays considers the means and extent of Haiti's 'exceptionalization' - its perception in multiple arenas as definitively unique with respect not only to the countries of the North Atlantic, but also to the rest of the Americas. Painted as repulsive and attractive, abject and resilient, singular and exemplary, Haiti has long been framed discursively by an extraordinary epistemological ambivalence. This nation has served at once as cautionary tale, model for humanitarian aid and development projects and point of origin for general theorising of the so-called Third World. What to make of this dialectic of exemplarity and alterity? How to pull apart this multivalent narrative in order to examine its constituent parts? Conscientiously gesturing to James Clifford's The Predicament of Culture (1988), the contributors to The Haiti Exception work on the edge of multiple disciplines, notably that of anthropology, to take up these and other such questions from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives, including Africana Studies, Anthrohistory, Art History, Black Studies, Caribbean Studies, education, ethnology, Jewish Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies and Urban Studies. As contributors revise and interrogate their respective praxes, they accept the challenge of thinking about the particular stakes of and motivations for their own commitment to Haiti.

The inability of the Haitian state to deal with the devastation of the January 2010 earthquake brought into sharp focus Haiti’s desperate social and economic conditions—and raised perplexing questions. What accounts for the country's continuing predicament? Why have repeated attempts at democratic governance failed so abysmally? And what role has the international community played? Addressing these questions, Robert Fatton focuses on Haiti's long history of predatory rule and also introduces the concept of the outer periphery to explore the impact of a world economy shaped by neoliberal policies. The result is an insightful analysis of contemporary Haitian politics and society with significant implications for the broader study of comparative politics.

Zu den Kernfragen der interkulturellen Germanistik gehört die nach dem Verhältnis von kultureller und poetischer Alterität: Welche Möglichkeiten und Grenzen haben ästhetische Texte bei der Repräsentation kultureller Differenz? Dieser Frage geht die Fallstudie zu 'Haiti' bei Heinrich von Kleist ("Die Verlobung in St. Domingo"), Anna Seghers ("Karibische Geschichten", "Drei Frauen aus Haiti"), Heiner Müller ("Der Auftrag"), Hans Christoph Buch ("Die Hochzeit von Port-au-Prince") und Hubert Fichte ("Xango") nach. Gezeigt wird, daß und warum Haiti in der Geschichte der neueren deutschen Literatur ein außergewöhnlich markanter und aufschlußreicher Bezugspunkt für die Verständigung über das eigene und das Fremde war und ist. Dabei gehen in die literarische Repräsentation Haitis, explizit oder in Form von Subtexten, Auseinandersetzungen um Rasse, Klasse und Geschlecht ein. Vor allem aber wird aufgezeigt, wie sich der Zusammenhang von Interkulturalität und Poetik verdichtet und verändert: Je ausgeprägter das Bewußtsein für die kulturelle Alterität, desto intensiver die Nutzung und Erweiterung der Möglichkeiten poetischen Sprechens bis hin zu anspruchsvollen und geglückten 'Poetiken der Interkulturalität'.
