The contributors to this volume discuss the formation and transformation of ancient concepts of authorship, specifically among those types of texts that are classified as "religious literature" - whether Greco-Roman, early Jewish, and early Christian. In twelve case studies spanning the time from Ben Sira to Tertullian, various ways of how authors considered themselves to be individual producers of texts and religious voices are carved out. The volume presents authors who fashion themselves either as orthonymous, anonymous, or pseudepigraphic writers, and who share the idea of being "religious agents". The search for these religious voices undertaken here is a valuable contribution to both research in ancient "Autorforschung" and the religio-historical study of how religious knowledge was produced in the ancient Mediterranean world.

Market globalization, technology, climate change, and postcolonial political forces are together forging a new, more modern world. However, caught up in the mix are some powerful religious narratives that are galvanizing peoples and reimagining - and sometimes stifling - the political and social order. Some are repressive, fundamentalist imaginations, such as the so-called Islamic Caliphate. Others could be described as post-religious, such as the evolution of universal human rights out of the European Christian tradition. But the question of the compatibility of these religious worldviews, particularly those that have emerged out of the Abrahamic faith traditions, is perhaps the most pressing issue in global stability today. What scope for dialogue is there between the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian ways of imagining the future? How can we engage with these multiple imaginations to create a shared and peaceful global society? Religious Imaginations and Global Transitions is an interdisciplinary volume of both new and well-known scholars exploring how religious narratives interact with the contemporary geopolitical climate.

This book provides an in-depth analysis of the virtues of evangelical life according to three major Franciscan authors: Francis of Assisi, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, and David of Augsburg. It is the first to offer a historical and source-based treatment of early Franciscan virtue discourse, by answering the following questions: How do the authors describe and prescribe the essential virtues for the life in the footsteps of Jesus Christ? How are the spiritual virtues acquired or lost? How do the development and application of these virtues shape “perfect” individuals as well as the “good” of the community? This work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of how the virtues functioned as central, organizing elements in early Franciscan literature and instruction.
