Doelstelling: In dit grammaticaal onderzoek is gewerkt rond het corpus 'De omweg naar Santiago' van Cees Nooteboom. In het kader van het VECU-project worden causale uitdrukkingen in de Spaanse vertaling 'El desvío a Santiago' onderzocht en vergeleken met de originele Nederlandse causale uitdrukkingen in hun context. Middelen of methode: Aan de hand van de resultaten van het corpusonderzoek worden de verschillen in eigenschappen onderzocht van causale uitdrukkingen, en in het bijzonder de specifieke eigenschappen van de Spaanse connector 'ya que'. Daarvoor wordt eerst een korte bespreking gegeven van de causale uitdrukkingen in het Nederlands en in het Spaans. Voor het corpusonderzoek is gebruik gemaakt van een database, opgebouwd uit fiches die elk afzonderlijk een causale sequentie bevatten, aangevuld met semantische en grammaticale kenmerken van de sequentie. Daarna wordt de analyse van die kenmerken vergeleken met de theorie rond de connectoren. Resultaten: In het corpus komen verschillende sequenties voor die de specifieke functies van 'ya que' duidelijk illustreren.
