River Futures offers a positive, practical, and constructive focus that directly addresses the major challenge of a new era of river conservation and rehabilitation-that of bringing together the diverse and typically discipline-bound sets of knowledge and practices that are involved in repairing rivers. It is a valuable resource for anyone involved in river restoration and management, including restorationists, scientists, managers, and policymakers, as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

Prepared by the Task Committee on Inland Navigation: Environmental Sustainability of the Waterways Committee of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI)of ASCE Inland Navigation: Environmental Sustainability provides the current state of environmental preservation procedures for inland waterways. It presents an overview of ecosystem sustainability procedures currently used. This technical report examines environmental considerations for construction, as well as operation and restoration of inland freshwater waterways in the continental United States, which includes the lower Mississippi and lower Columbia rivers. Topics include•Hydrology and hydraulics;•Sedimentation, dredging, and disposal;•Water quality;•Habitat (aquatic, terrestrial, wetlands);•Migratory fish and birds;•Historic preservation; and•Restoration and environmental laws directed to waterway design and operation. This report is a valuable reference for those involved with waterway design and operations and will be of use as an educational text for the academic community.

"One of the most influential, and perhaps surprising, developments in environmental policy in recent decades is the idea that we can protect the environment from the negative impacts of economic development by making environmental protection itself more economic. The goal is to reduce environmental harm not by preventing it, but by pricing it. Using stream mitigation banking, that is the market for rivers and streams under Section 404 of the US Clean Water Act, as a case, Lave and Doyle explain where market-based environmental management approaches came from, how they work in practice, and what they do on ground"--

Based on the interdisciplinary approaches between earth science, engineering, physical geography, ecology and management, this text focuses on the theoretical questions, case-studies, challenges, and constraints taken from river restoration. It is illustrated with reports of new ground-breaking research covering spatial and temporal scales of physical processes in river catchments, coupling catchment and fluvial processes, grain dynamics and fluvial forms and on geo-ecology and restoration in mountain gravel-bed river environments. Each chapter includes discussions and comments providing exper

As urban areas keep growing, water infrastructure ages, and the requirements on environmental protection become more rigorous, there is a continual need for upgrading water pollution control facilities and restoring degraded urban waters. Such issues are addressed in this book by focusing on five major topics: (a) Upgrading stormwater management facilities, (b) Retrofitting / upgrading combined sewer overflow (CSO) facilities, (c) Optimising/upgrading sewage treatment plant performance, (d) Urban stream restoration, and (e) Challenges in restoring urban environment. Each chapter contains some overview papers followed by research or case study papers. Besides presentations of new approaches and accomplishments in the field of upgrading and restoration, several papers provide analysis of vast needs in this field in several countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which either recently joined the European Union (EU) or are preparing for accession, and need to comply with the existing EU directives dealing with environmental protection. As such, this book will be of primary interest to researchers and university lecturers dealing with environmental upgrading and restoration, environmental planners from all levels of government, municipal engineers and politicians, and finally the private industry representatives (consultants, private utilities and environmental technology suppliers) searching for new business opportunities among the new or aspiring members of EU.
