Spengler aurait-il eu raison ? Tandis que les symptômes de crise se multiplient dans le monde, on assiste à un regain d'intérêt pour l'auteur du Déclin de l'Occident (1918-1922). Cependant, si ce titre est fréquemment cité, l'œuvre elle-même reste largement méconnue, notamment en France. Comment Spengler se représentait-il ce déclin ? Il fait preuve d'un pessimisme culturel profond : à terme, l'Occident et ses valeurs cesseront de jouer un rôle historique. Sa critique de la rationalisation du monde, du passage d'une « culture » créatrice à une « civilisation » tournée vers des tâches quantitatives et matérielles, celle des mœurs qui s'installent dans les métropoles cosmopolites, du système technicien, du libéralisme politique et économique, doit nous alerter sur l'évolution de l'Occident au sein d'une mondialisation dont la maîtrise lui échappe. À charge pour nous de lui donner tort en ne succombant pas à son relativisme anti-humaniste, à son fatalisme historique, et à l'esthétisme d'un « réalisme héroïque » justifiant une brutale politique de puissance.

As Adam One and his intrepid hemp-clad band make their way through a ruined world, singing their devotional hymns and faithful to their creed and to their Saints - Saint Francis Assisi, Saint Rachel Carson, and Saint Al Gore among them - what odds for Ren and Toby, and for the human race? By turns dark, tender, violent, thoughtful and uneasily hilarious, The Year of the Flood is Atwood at her most effective.
