Raterio, monaco di Lobbes e poi vescovo di Verona, compose la «Qualitatis coniectura» ormai settantenne, nel 966; di lì a poco sarà definitivamente allontanato dal soglio episcopale veronese. Opera di problematica definizione, incerta tra una tentazione di autobiografismo e la necessità di difendersi dalle accuse dei numerosi detrattori, la «Qualitatis coniectura» è soprattutto il vivido ritratto di un mondo lontano, ma anche singolarmente attuale: attraverso una narrazione brillante e ironica ritorna a vivere davanti ai nostri occhi la figura del suo autore, uno degli intellettuali più complessi e affascinanti nell'Europa del secolo X.
