The starting point for the anthology was the Budapest premiere of Naeem Mohaiemen’s film Two Meetings and a Funeral (2017), curated by Eszter Szakács at tranzit.hu. The book’s title is an homage to Michel Foucault’s Society Must Be Defended (1976). We take up Foucault’s short- lived enthusiasm for the 1979 Iranian Islamic revolution as a case of misrecognition due to judgments formed in the heat of the moment. We start from this event to ask: Is every action capable of building solidarity, or can it boomerang with challenging allies, ambiguous manifestos, and accelerated timelines?

4chan.org is an image board website created in 2003. It’s known as one of the seediest and desperate places on the internet where users generally post anonymously. At first, it may seem that only the most offensive and abhorrent messages survive on the site, and yet despite its poor reputation, can offer sincere insight into human anxieties, desires and access the darkest parts of the mind; presumed to be manipulated if not shaped by our society. Anonymity can both enable contact without restraint as well as unexpectedly awaken empathy. Obviously, it’s a complex conflation of conditions, none of which can define the whole. In his book, Simon attempts to grasp the phenomenology of 4chan by combining analytic, associative and lyrical writing with threads cited directly from the board. He postulates that the underlying structure of 4chan implements a theoretical structure that is similar to the ‚Rhizome’ as described by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. This includes the concept of a dynamic system, having directions in motion instead of secluded facts and offering multiple exits. - AKV Berlin

A travers l'analyse détaillée de sept films phares (Chantage, Meurtre, Rebecca, Les Enchaînés, Fenêtre sur cour, Vertigo et Frenzy), l'auteur montre que le propos d'Hitchcock concerne la construction sociale et psychologique des identités et des rapports de sexe, et que sa capacité à s'identifier et à nous faire nous identifier à des protagonistes aussi bien masculins que féminins exprime l'ambivalence fondamentale de son rapport aux femmes. Ni misogyne, ni féministe, Hitchcock nous émeut parce qu'il nous renvoie à nos propres contradictions et à nos propres souffrances.

Il était temps de devenir propriétaires. Soucieux de notre empreinte environnementale, nous voulions une construction peu énergivore, bâtie en matériaux durables. Aux confins de la ville se tramaient des écoquartiers. Notre choix s'est porté sur une petite commune en plein essor. Nous étions sûrs de réaliser un bon investissement. Plusieurs mois avant de déménager, nous avons mesuré nos meubles, découpé des bouts de papier pour les représenter à l'échelle. Sur la table de la cuisine, nous déroulions les plans des architectes, et nous jouions à déplacer la bibliothèque, le canapé, à la recherche des emplacements les plus astucieux. Nous étions impatients de vivre enfin chez nous. Et peut-être aurions-nous réalisé notre rêve si, une semaine après notre installation, les Lecoq n'avaient emménagé de l'autre côté du mur.
