Sayyid Qutb fut condamné à mort en 1966 pour ses écrits politiques. Son commentaire coranique Fi zilâl al-qu'ran, qui comporte six volumes, est le livre de chevet d'un grand nombre de musulmans du monde arabe, militants ou non. L'actualité de ce penseur, dont se réclament les Frères musulmans radicaux, est évidente. Le mérite d'Olivier Carré est de dépasser des interprétations trop rapides, fondées sur quelques déclarations ou actions de «qutbistes», en utilisant une méthode de lecture rigoureuse qui met en lumière les grands thèmes du texte fondamental : l'émancipation coranique véritable des femmes et de la famille, l'intégration de non-musulmans dans la société islamique idéale, le «combat pour Dieu», les biens et la justice sociale, la «socialité» de la société islamique vraie, la notion d'Etat islamique.

Grounded in the stories of their actual visits, What They Saw in America takes the reader through the journeys of four distinguished, yet very different foreign visitors - Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, G. K. Chesterton and Sayyid Qutb - who travelled to the United States between 1830 and 1950. The comparative insights of these important outside observers (from both European and Middle Eastern countries) encourage sober reflection on a number of features of American culture that have persisted over time - individualism and conformism, the unique relationship between religion and capitalism, indifference toward nature, voluntarism, attitudes toward race, and imperialistic tendencies.
