Women's lower rates of ownership of collateralizable assets are a constraint to accessing larger business loans. This paper tests the impact of using psychometric credit scoring as a substitute for collateral for loans up to US7,500, via a randomized controlled trial with a microfinance institution in Ethiopia. The paper finds positive impacts on women's access to credit, and survival of their firms during the COVID-19 pandemic and conflict. Firms that remained operational were profitable; but there is limited evidence of impact on firm growth under these circumstances. The study showcases the potential for using innovative technologies to extend entrepreneurial finance to underserved markets.

This paper studies the use of psychometric tests, which were designed by the Entrepreneurial Finance Lab as a tool to screen out high credit risk and potentially increase access to credit for small business owners in Peru. The analysis uses administrative data covering the period from June 2011 to April 2014 to compare debt accrual and repayment behavior patterns across entrepreneurs who were offered a loan based on the traditional credit-scoring method versus the Entrepreneurial Finance Lab tool. The paper finds that the psychometric test can lower the risk of the loan portfolio when used as a secondary screening mechanism for already banked entrepreneurs-that is, those with a credit history. For unbanked entrepreneurs-those without a credit history-using the Entrepreneurial Finance Lab tool can increase access to credit without increasing portfolio risk.

Psychometrika is devoted to the advancement of theory and methodology for behavioral data in psychology, education and the social and behavioral sciences generally. It has two sections: Theory and Methods (T& M), and Application Reviews and Case Studies (ARCS). T&M articles present original research and, occasionally, insightful reviews, addressing the development of quantitative models, statistical methods, and mathematical techniques for evaluating data from psychology, the social and behavioral sciences, and related fields. ARCS articles provide benchmarks for future applications in any of these areas: Application Reviews can be integrative, drawing together disparate methodologies for applications, or comparative and evaluative, discussing advantages and disadvantages of one or more methodologies in applications. Case Studies highlight methodology that deepens understanding of substantive phenomena through more informative data analysis, and/or more elegant data description.

The assimilation theory of verbal learning leads to meaningful learning wherein the learning outcomes take the form of concept maps—networks of some selected linguistic expressions and concepts. Concept-map-based education helps avoid rote learning, prepare content for effective on-ground and e-learning, and measure learning outcomes at the course, program, and institutional levels. As a result, it has been used at school, college, university, and professional levels. This book consists of five selected articles, providing insights into concept-map-based education, and will benefit students, teachers, and education managers.
