"The orientation of this volume is essentially pragmatic. It deals with the concrete problems involved in establishing and running a professional mental health service on a college campus. In its most general formulation the issue to which we address ourselves is that of mutual adaptation between the organizational structure of a traditional educational institution and the internal organization of the counseling process. The content of this volume is essentially a report of the experiences of one school, Brandeis University, in working out a particular pattern of mutual adaptation between a school environment and the counseling process. Our major interest has been in working out effective counseling procedures; consequently, the major portion of the book (Chapters III and IV) is devoted to a discussion by the staff of the Counseling Center of the situational factors to which the counseling process must adapt, or which it can utilize to special advantage, and of practices which have shown promise in these respects"--Preface. "As we move into the postwar years, the counseling of servicemen, servicewomen, and war workers assumes an importance it has never had before. It is the aim of these chapters to assist in the training of the many individuals who are undertaking these counseling responsibilities in government and private agencies, in military and civilian organizations, in religious and secular groups. The principles that are set forth have relevance to a wide variety of situations"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved).

This sixth book in the 'Prevention Practice Kit' series provides an introduction to evidence-based prevention in psychology. Counsellors, psychologists and mental health workers are increasingly expected to select evidence-based practices and programmes, and to document the effectiveness of the care they provide. The book addresses the types of questions that may be most pertinent to professionals who are engaged in prevention and interested in understanding evidence-based programmes.
