Abstract

The Alexander Romance by Ps.-Callisthenes' of Krzysztof Nawotka is a guide to a third century AD fictional biography of Alexander the Great, the anonymous 'Historia Alexandri Magni'. It is a historical commentary which identifies all names and places in this piece of Greek literature approached as a source for the history of Alexander the Great, from kings, like Nectanebo II of Egypt and Darius III of Persia, to fictional characters. It discusses real and imaginary geography of the 'Alexander Romance'. While dealing with all aspects of Ps.-Callisthenes relevant to Greek history and to Macedonia, its pays particular attention to aspects of ancient history and culture of Babylonia and Egypt and to the multi-layered foundation story of Alexandria.

Abstract

This volume deals with the issue of the Arabic translation of the Greek Alexander Romance by Pseudo-Callisthenes. From a philological study of various Greek recensions (α, β (L, λ), γ, ε) to a mosaic of Arabic sources related to one of the most popular texts of the Middle Ages – some of them yet unknown to a broader audience – it points out how the Alexander Romance, as a special example of the Graeco-Arabic translation movement, was rendered into Arabic. Apart from the written tradition, either in form of a translation from the Greek or a paraphrase, the oral tradition based on Surah 18 of the Qu'ran plays a central role. The influence of several Greek recensions can be traced in various Arabic sources. This synthesis of the most important Arabic translations of the legendary biography of Alexander the Great aims to give a detailed overview of those chapters of several Greek versions which have been received in the Orient, illustrating how Ancient Greek and Byzantine literature made their way into the Islamic world. Thus it also shows clearly which elements of the historical and legendary biography of the Macedonian have aroused the interest of not only Islamic but also Christian authors of the Abbasid times. In summary, this contribution offers a basis for further philological investigations of the extremely complex and eclectic translation process of the Alexander Romance, perceived even more as a historical than as a legendary account in the Orient. The book is written in French.

Abstract

The life and exploits of the Macedonian King Alexander the Great were recorded and passed down in the legendary biography, known as the Alexander Romance of Pseudo-Callisthenes. During the Middle Ages the Romance became extremely popular, after its Greek original had been translated and elaborated in numerous versions and vernaculars. Alexander's fame spread all over Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central and South East Asia. In this study the focus is on the Arabic tradition. For the first time this field of research has now been explored in all its details, resulting in a complete survey and classification of this rich tradition. The book is written as a quest. It presents the process of tracing manuscripts and texts, some of which were considered lost, others still unknown. One of the major results is the discovery of manuscripts of the long sought for Arabic translation of Pseudo-Callisthenes' Alexander Romance. By this find the author proved the survival of this text, reconstructed its stemma and investigated its character and provenance. Another merit of this study is the portrayal of Alexander, as he occurs in all different genres of Arabic and Islamic literature. A classification of the texts, a detailed analysis and many translated episodes offer the reader a coherent view on this literature, that shows Alexander on time as a pre-Islamic world conqueror, another as a seeker of Wisdom and even as a religious messenger. Finally, there is a summary of an Arabic folk epic, Sirat al-Iskandar, which demonstrates the complete incorporation of Alexander as the protagonist of a specimen of Arab popular lore. This survey of the Arabic Alexander tradition complies with a long felt need among scholars of Medieval Studies, Islamic Studies, Comparative Literature, as well as among classicists, historians, orientalists and anyone interested in the legacy of Alexander.
