An in-depth political history of privatization in Central and Eastern Europe, The Politics of Greed demonstrates that the way that assets are privatized matters, both with respect to national economic performance and the successful development of the rule of law. Andrew Harrison Schwartz had unprecedented access to high-level Czech government officials during the Czech Republic's privatization process. This book is the result of the unique insights he gained and the innovative analytical framework he subsequently developed-ownership regime theory-which for the first time places ownershi

This study analyzes the impacts of the financial crisis on power sectors in five countries in the region: Armenia, Kyrgyz Republic, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. Before the financial crisis, these countries faced expected power shortages as a result of large investment gaps. With the financial crisis, GDP dropped, leading to a drop in demand for electricity. The drop in demand created a window of opportunity for meeting investment needs, but the crisis has limited the sources of financing available to the sector. In the post-crisis period, the study concludes that policymakers need to prioritiz

This book, by a distinguished economist who has worked on transition since its beginning, is one of the first to present a unified analysis of transition. Transition in Central and Eastern Europe has led to a U-shaped response of output, that is, a sharp decline in output followed by recovery. This U-shaped response, its causes and its implications, are the subject of this text. Blanchard analyses the basic mechanisms at work, and draws policy implications. TheEconomics of Post-Communist Transition is now available in paperback for the first time.
