L'image de la Mort a hanté toutes les époques. Du Moyen Âge à nos jours, elle s'est glissée dans l'imaginaire des artistes, souvent sous l'apparence d'une silhouette squelettique, avec pour devise : "Memento mori". Toujours présente pour rappeler que la vie a une fin, elle tend aux hommes un miroir au reflet funeste, celui de leur condition passagère sur terre. Selon les périodes historiques, elle a incarné, si l'on peut dire, les barbaries de la guerre en même temps que les idéaux d'égalité et de paix, ainsi que des figures plus ordinaires. Séductrice et amante, elle a aussi été représentée maligne et grimaçante, inventant des stratagèmes diaboliques pour serrer les hommes dans son étreinte. Mais la plupart du temps, elle apparaît dansante, prise dans une ronde sans fin. Et c'est cette danse, celle de la vie mêlée à la mort, qui a trouvé dans les arts graphiques un écho particulier. Si Holbein est à l'origine d'une telle tradition iconographique, des artistes comme Beham, Aldegrever, Brentel, Van der Heyden, Bresdin, Doré, Rethel, Klinger, Sattler, Masereel, Grosz, Dix, Heartfield jusqu'aux illustrateurs contemporains Ungerer, Winshluss et Tanxxx, ont nourri le genre des danses macabres de leur vision renouvelée. Ce catalogue présente un ensemble remarquable de leurs productions, conservées dans les collections des Musées de la Ville de Strasbourg et d'autres institutions françaises et allemandes. Il éclaire en outre la longue histoire de l'imaginaire macabre par des contributions de spécialistes et d'historiens de l'art.

"This book examines the early development of the graphic arts from the perspectives of material things, human actors and immaterial representations while broadening the geographic field of inquiry to Central Europe and the British Isles and considering the reception of the prints on other continents. The role of human actors proves particularly prominent, i.e. the circumstances that informed creators', producers', owners' and beholders' motivations and responses. Certainly, such a complex relationship between things, people and images is not an exclusive feature of the pre-modern period's print cultures. However, the rise of printmaking challenged some established rules in the arts and visual realms and thus provides a fruitful point of departure for further study of the development of the various functions and responses to printed images in the sixteenth century. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, print history, book history, and European studies"
