La question de l'hébreu à Genève et la personne de Jean Calvin sont liées, quoique peu étudiées. Il s'agissait donc de conduire l’étude et de dresser un inventaire de l’hébreu dans le livre imprimé genevois au XVIe siècle. Après que Lyse Schwarzfuchs avait publié Le livre hébreu à Paris au XVIe siècle (2004) puis L’hébreu dans le livre lyonnais au XVIe siècle (2008), elle était la mieux à même pour parachever l’enquête en terres francophones et réaliser un triptyque aussi utile que précieux. Les ouvrages comprenant des caractères hébreux recensés aussi bien à Paris qu’à Lyon avaient essentiellement révélé le désir de diffuser grâce à l’Hebraica veritas un hébraïsme catholique. Avec le début de la Réforme, l’Hebraica veritas devient un enjeu dans la controverse entre catholiques et adhérents de la Réforme, c’est ce qui apparaît clairement dans l’édition genevoise, dont Calvin est l’initiateur. Lyse Schwarzfuchs s’est donc efforcée de décrire un corpus de cent trente ouvrages comportant de l’hébreu et ayant paru à Genève : livres entièrement en hébreu, dont le catéchisme de Jean Calvin, mais également des ouvrages comportant des pièces en vers, des citations ou une devise, voire quelques mots isolés. Elle présente et commente, dans une introduction importante, une liste documentée des auteurs, imprimeurs, dédicataires, en majeure partie des exilés venus de France, qui ont marqué cette production. Elle recense également les types de caractères hébreux utilisés. Cet ouvrage constitue désormais un outil de travail indispensable.
