Véritable "Silicon Valley" de l'Europe au milieu du XVe siècle, la région du Rhin supérieur a vu la naissance et l'essor d'une technique qui allait révolutionner le monde : l'imprimerie. C'est à Strasbourg en effet que Gutenberg a expérimenté en secret, dans les années 1440, l'impression par caractères mobiles, avant de s'installer à Mayence où s'est déployé son génie. Dans son sillage, en lien avec les élites urbaines et intellectuelles des cités rhénanes, une véritable pépinière d'imprimeurs, d'éditeurs, de graveurs allait donner forme aux nouvelles circulations de la culture et des idées. Pourquoi Strasbourg ? Base arrière du concile de Bâle, foyer intellectuel de premier plan, elle disposait aussi d'orfèvres et de papetiers, indispensables à la création d'ateliers d'imprimerie. Les artistes et les bibliophiles formaient un public curieux, à l'affût des nouveautés. C'est ainsi que, à la fin du XVe siècle et au début du XVIe siècle, dans un contexte de grands bouleversements (débuts de la Réforme, découverte du Nouveau Monde), la ville libre de Strasbourg est devenue une capitale du livre illustré dans le monde germanique, fameuse pour ses spécialités dans les ouvrages de littérature, de géographie, de chirurgie. Ses imprimeurs et éditeurs étaient de véritables aventuriers, prenant tous les risques, techniques, financiers, mais aussi intellectuels et politiques. C'est à une passionnante plongée dans ce monde bouillonnant, picaresque parfois, que Georges Bischoff nous convie, avec son sens de la fresque et son souci du détail révélateur.
