In recent years, migration has become one of the most discussed phenomena, both within and outside the academic world. This book takes into account how Syrian female refugees are socially, economically, culturally, ethnically and sexually marginalized. The author analyzes how discourses produced in the Turkish host society affect Syrian female refugees and local women. What do these women think about the ongoing events, their status and the steps the Syrian government and NGOs as well have taken so far in order to produce solutions for women's invisibilization in the public sphere?

As the controversy surrounding the release of Uli Edel and Bernd Eichinger's 2008 feature film 'The Baader Meinhof Complex' demonstrates, West Germany's terrorist period, which reached its height in the 'German autumn' of 1977, is still a fascinating - and troubling - subject. One of the most provocative aspects, still today, is the high proportion of women involved in terrorism, most notoriously Ulrike Meinhof. That the film concentrates on the trajectory of Meinhof's life and mobilizes established and hence reassuring paradigms of femininity in its representation of her (as 'mother' and 'hysterical woman') suggests that the combination of women and violence is still threatening and that there is still mileage to be had from feminizing the discourse. The present study returns to the West German print media of the 1960s and 1970s and raises questions about the continuing preoccupation with this period. Looking at publications from the right-wing 'Bild' to the liberal 'Der Spiegel', it explores how violent women - not only terrorists but also others such as the convicted murderer and media femme fatale Vera Brühne - were represented in text and image. This is the first book to explore print-media representations of German terrorism from an explicitly gendered perspective, and one of very few books in English to address the period in Germany at all, despite steadily increasing interest in the UK and the US. Clare Bielby is Lecturer in German Studies at the University of Hull.

Medieval romance frequently, and perhaps characteristically, capitalises on the dramatic and suggestive possibilities implicit in boundaries - not only the geographical, political and cultural frontiers that medieval romances imagine and imply, but also more metaphorical demarcations. It is these boundaries, as they appear in insular romances circulating in English and French, which the essays in this volume address. They include the boundary between reality and fictionality; boundaries between different literary traditions, modes and cultures; and boundaries between different kinds of experience or perception, especially the 'altered states' associated with sickness, magic, the supernatural, or the divine.

"This anthology, the first of its kind, presents thirty-two texts on contemporary prints and printmaking written from the mid-1980s to the present by authors from across the world. The texts range from history and criticism to creative writing. More than a general survey, they provide a critical topography of artistic printmaking during the period. The book is directed at an audience of international stakeholders in the field of contemporary print, printmaking and printmedia, including art students, practising artists, museum curators, critics, educationalists, print publishers and print scholars. It expands debate in the field and will act as a starting point for further research."--Publisher's description

The fifteenth century defies consensus on fundamental issues; most scholars agree, however, that this period outgrew the Middle Ages, that it was a time of transition and a passage to modern times. Founded in 1977 as the publication organ for the Fifteenth-Century Symposia, 'Fifteenth-Century Studies' offers essays on diverse aspects of the fifteenth century, including liberal and fine arts, historiography, medicine, and religion. Following the standard opening article on the current state of fifteenth-century drama research, volume 33 offers essays investigating authors such as Christine de Pizan, Hans Sachs, Hartmann Schedel, Alain Chartier, and Robert Henryson. Genres and themes treated include drama, epistles of persuasion, late Arthurian romances, translations, mythology and folklore, print media, and art appreciation. Alternative interpretations are afforded by Franco Mormando's study of male nakedness and the Franciscans. Twelve book reviews round out the volume. Contributors: Edelgard E. DuBruck, Tracy Adams, Lidia Amor, Roció del Río Fernández, Leonardas Vytautas Gerulaitis, Jonathan Green, Christiane J. Hessler, Ashby Kinch, Franco Mormondo, Alessandra Petrina. Edelgard E. DuBruck is professor emerita of French and Humanities at Marygrove College, Detroit, Michigan, and Barbara I. Gusick is professor emerita of English at Troy University, Dothan, Alabama.

Based on an in-depth examination of Mexico's print and broadcast media over the last twenty-five years, this book is the most richly detailed account available of the role of the media in democratization, demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between changes in the press and changes in the political system. In addition to illuminating the nature of political change in Mexico, this accessibly written study also has broad implications for understanding the role of the mass media in democratization around the world.

Many of American journalism's best-known and most cherished stories are exaggerated, dubious, or apocryphal. They are media-driven myths, and they attribute to the news media and their practitioners far more power and influence than they truly exert. In Getting It Wrong, writer and scholar W. Joseph Campbell confronts and dismantles prominent media-driven myths, describing how they can feed stereotypes, distort understanding about the news media, and deflect blame from policymakers. Campbell debunks the notions that the Washington Post's Watergate reporting brought down Richard M. Nixon's corrupt presidency, that Walter Cronkite's characterization of the Vietnam War in 1968 shifted public opinion against the conflict, and that William Randolph Hearst vowed to "furnish the war" against Spain in 1898. This expanded second edition includes a new preface and new chapters about the first Kennedy-Nixon debate in 1960, the haunting Napalm Girl photograph of the Vietnam War, and bogus quotations driven by the Internet and social media.
