Bien que Giorgio Vasari ait fait l'éloge de ses constructions françaises et assigné ainsi à Primatice (1504-1570), héritier de Raphaël et de Giulio Romano, une place éminente parmi les architectes de la Renaissance, l'histoire de l'art a tardé à reconnaître son oeuvre. En 1900, Louis Dimier a mis en relief le rôle fondamental qu'avait joué l'architecture dans son itinéraire artistique. Mais tout au long du XXe siècle la recherche ne s'est guère intéressée à cet aspect essentiel de son activité et les organisateurs de la grande exposition de 2004, Primatice maître de Fontainebleau, ont préféré ne pas aborder le sujet. Quand cette exposition vint à Bologne, ville natale de l'artiste, nous avons publié un ouvrage collectif Francesco Primaticcio architetto, le premier consacré à cette problématique. Le présent volume en reprend l'essentiel, c'est-à-dire les contributions concernant l'oeuvre architecturale de Primatice en France, revues par les auteurs et enrichies de réflexions nouvelles. Victimes de l'évolution du goût, la plupart des bâtiments de Primatice, souvent restés inachevés, ont disparu et l'absence de dessins d'architecture autographes rend encore plus difficile l'étude de son oeuvre. Si les caractéristiques du style architectural de Primatice sont encore visibles au château de Fontainebleau et dans la chapelle funéraire de Diane de Poitiers à Anet, les restitutions graphiques, fondées sur la recherche archéologique et l'étude critique des documents, peuvent seules donner une idée des édifices détruits: la fontaine d'Hercule, la grotte du château de Meudon et la Rotonde des Valois. Ces édifices révèlent un artiste de premier rang, créateur d'architectures spectaculaires, promoteur d'échanges renouvelés entre la France et l'Italie, auteur de synthèses originales associant les deux cultures. Cette oeuvre jette une lumière nouvelle sur la réception de la Renaissance italienne en France entre 1540 et 1570 et les métamorphoses du vocabulaire architectural qui eurent lieu pendant cette période. Elle illustre de manière exemplaire la circulation des modèles et des savoirs.
