Abstract

"The first 1,000 days, from conception to two years of age, is a critical period of growth and development. Exposures to dietary, environmental, hormonal, and other stressors during this window have been associated with an increased risk of poor health outcomes, some of which are irreversible. The book addresses this crucial interval of early life across biological disciplines, linking concepts related to all biological fields to outcomes during the first 1,000 days (e.g. fetal growth and pregnancy outcomes) and beyond (e.g. gut microbiome and cardiovascular disease later in life). The strength of this book lies in its cross-disciplinary nature."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Hypertensive disorders remain one the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and death. It is also a leading cause of preterm birth now known to be a risk factor in remote cardiovascular disease. Despite this, the hypertensive disorders remain marginally studied, and their management is commonly controversial. Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy remains one of the beacons to guide this field, recognized for its uniqueness and utility.

Abstract

Complications of pregnancy are health issues that are caused by pregnancy itself. These can happen during or after delivery (obstetric labor complications or puerperal disorders). Complications can be classified as mild, severe, immediate, or long-term health problems. Complications of pregnancy can cause maternal morbidity and mortality. The most common causes of maternal mortality are maternal bleeding, maternal sepsis, hypertensive diseases, obstructed labor, and pregnancy with the consequence of abortion, which includes miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and medical abortion.Heath problems can develop during pregnancy, which may be directly related to the pregnancy itself or nonobstetric disorders, such as pregnancy complicated by medical diseases. One of the main complications is obstetric abnormalities that increase the risk of morbidity or mortality for the pregnant woman and her fetus. High-risk pregnancy is an indicator of a maternal complication during pregnancy.
